Did any of you have ancestors that fought in the Civil war on either side. The only one I know of was my great-great-great grandfather who was a colonel in the confederacy.

My Dad and Mom both had relatives who fought in the Civil War (for the South in all cases). My Dad's direct ancestor was with the Army of Northern Virginia from beginning to end and went home, married and had 13 kids

My Moms family were not direct ancestors though, but my favorite of all of the stories is how 5 of my ancestors (cousins) went off to war together (they were brothers) and 4 turned north to go to Virginia and 1 went West and was never heard from again (since only 1 of the brothers who went North came home, the guy who went West might have been a better long range planner)

Another cousin on Moms side died at Gettysburg (Picketts Charge), but the remaining relatives who died were victims of disease or nameless skirmishes

at Petersburg Virginia, the National Archives have information on just about everybody who served, so if you can find your ancestors name, you can find out what they did and how they fared.

Yep. For the North.

I also have an ancestor who helped Ethan Allen take Fort Ticonderoga in the Revolution. Killing people in their sleep... yum yum.

Nope. The earliest war that I know that any of my ancestors fought in was WWII, but who didn't have an ancestor/relative fight in that?
What I find interesting, btw, was that my great-grandfather fought in WWII for the Axis Italians. He was involved in the occupation of Ethiopia.

Yes, one guy. His name was Greenleaf Willey, no shit.
He fought for the north from I think New Hampshire and was left for dead on a battlefield, he woke up in enemy territory and assumed the identity of a dead confederate. He married and lived in Texas under that name for a number of years until it was discovered. I can't remember the details but it involved some controversy with his offspring and a big pain in the ass for a second cousin of mine who is tracking geneology.

My family's been here for a while, and was heavily involved mostly on the north side of the conflict and mostly from Colorado. I am indirectly (not directly through paternal lineage) related to one of the freed slaves that stayed on to fight with the north, and am also related to folks (through my mother's side) that fought for General Lee.
