Please don't try to debate all these at once - I just want a list of debate topics of interest that might be thrown out every few days to mix up0 the rounds of atheists vs theists, Kerry vs Bush, draft vs none, etc. that seem to be rehashed every week.

Threads that are not political are always refreshing. A thread on why baseball is the worst sport ever would be nice.

I am surprised that no one has voted "yes" for outlawing arranged marriages. This is a despicable, abhorrent practice designed to turn young people into mere proxies of their parents, pawns if you will for parents who marry their kids off for their own interests, not their kids'. Also, a lot of young children are forced into these marriages at an age at which they cannot possibly consent to be married. It's as if we can't trust people to make their own decisions...say what you will about the divorce rate or declining birth rates; divorce and fewer children are a choice. Letting people out of bad marriages full of adultery or abuse is a far better option than forcing them to stay for the benefit of the kids or their religion. Kids will be far better off with divorced parents who are happy and can care for them without living in constant fear than they will with an abusive, alcoholic parent who sleeps around. As for religion, let's be honest - if there is a supernatural power, don't you think it has better things to do than micromanage people's lives?

Not sure what that means, but I have always heard arranged marriage in some sort of religious context. Back when Europe was ruled by the Catholic Church (indirectly, really, but you understand what I mean) arranged marriages were commonplace. Arranged marriage today is largely in tribal African societies, the Muslim world, and India, where religion is predominant. The common theme in these arranged marriages is the idea that they must do it and cannot get out. There is no consent issue for the people to be married. Sure, if a parent picks out a spouse for their kid and the kid is cool with it, there's no reason that can't be accepted. But if a parent picks out a spouse for the kid and the kid says no, the answer must be no.

Arranged marriages *already are* outlawed in the united states.

There exists no legal means for parents to force their children to marry against their will. It is a cultural affair, any participant in an 'arranged marriage' has no legal compulsion to consent to the marriage.
