Yeah, it's weird, you have to post the thread and THEN do the poll. I wish it were coordinated!

I think there is a box you can click when you post a thread that says "Attach a poll" or something. Then it lets you do the poll after you've written your post.

There are no classic albums on that list, the AC/DC comes the closest, some would call it a classic, but those metalheads really don't know music. Anyways it's not their best work, so there would be better options if you had to list an AC/DC album.

There are no classic albums on that list,And who on earth is Maria Carey? Is she one of those women who screech and wail a lot, wobbling all round the note without actually hitting it? They seem rather popular at the moment from what I hear.

By the end of the 70s, AC/DC were on the verge of superstardom. But with all the debauchery and boozing surrounding the band, the fast lane caught up with a vengeance. Lead singer Bon Scott drank himself to death, leaving the Australian outfit between a Highway to Hell and a hard place. They considered breaking up, but chose to move forward. By some miraculous streak of luck, Brian Johnson, an up-and-coming Scot who'd been paying his dues with the obscure Geordie band, became their new singer. Within five months, AC/DC produced their biggest blast of high voltage to date. It pitched a tent and settled down for almost six months in Billboard's Top Ten. A year after its release, Back In Black was the best selling hard rock album of all time.

It was released in 1980. So by automobile definitions, it is a "classic" approaching "antique" status. Any Classic Rock radio station will include this in their line up. It is classic in the style and presentation of the kind of hard rock it represents, as it retained many of the elements being made popular at the time, as well as breaking some new ground. It has been a source of inspiration of hard rock artists since, not just the recording, but the band as well.

I don't even like it all that much, but I respect the hell out of it.

There are no classic albums on that list, the AC/DC comes the closest, some would call it a classic, but those metalheads really don't know music.

What definition of "classic" are YOU using, bud? Or do you seem to think that for something to be "classic" it has to be Classical Greek Revival, or several hundred years old?

EDIT: and I failed to mention that 7 of the 10 songs on the release (Hells Bells, Shoot To Thrill, Given The Dog A Bone, Back In Black, You Shook Me All Night Long, Have A Drink On Me, and Rock And Roll Ain't Noise Pollution) are regularly played on just about every Classic Rock station across the USA.

I would consider a classic an album that , you know, doesn't suck. With the exception of AC/DC, you're managed to hit 'terrible' for every other one.

Whatever happened to Dark Side of the Moon? You'd have to be as old as me to understand what I'm talking about, the definition of 'metal' has changed over the years. They were at one time classified as a 'heavy metal' band, now they are just a bunch of wizened 'classic' rockers.

THE LOST PLANET is right. There aren't any classic albums on that list. In fact, let's face it, there aren't even any good albums on that list. It's all pop music, and none of them are exactly the Beatles White Album, are they?

1. something being on a classic rock station does not make it automatically either classic or good.

2. whether you consider something a classic or not depends on your personal taste. so does whether you consider something good or not. For instance, I think Sonic Youth are one of the greatest rock bands, and I think Radiohead suck. that doesn't make me right, it's just what I like. I know other people who can't even listen to Sonic Youth and think Radiohead is one of the best things ever. I even knew a guy who said that any music other than classical wasn't even real music. He's entitled to his opinion.

3. I think that the word "classic" should no longer be used to describe anything, and never should have been used. There is an assumption that "classic" means "great," which is not how I see it - I've read "classic" books which I think are terrible, seen terrible "classic" movies, heard "classic" music that I find bland and boring.
I've also noticed my tastes continually expanding (not changing, expanding) over my life. There was a time I hated Sonic Youth as well, because I did not yet understand it. perhaps I don't yet understand Radiohead.

so, without further ado, just some of *my* favourite albums, in no particular order (and not considered classics by me, simply great albums):

Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
Orbital - In Sides
Future Sound of London - "Lifeforms", and the "Cascade" single
Beatles - White Album
Rush - Presto, Moving Pictures, Grace Under Pressure
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Front242 - "Up Evil", and "Off"
Steve Vai - Passion and Warfare
Pink Floyd - absolutely everything up to and including The Wall
Aphex Twin - "Selected Ambient Works vol I & II", and "I Care Because You Do"
My Bloody Valentine - absolutely anything they ever released, except the first ep, which isn't very good at all.
Cocteau Twins - almost anything released
REM - Automatic For The People
Goldfrapp - everything they release
Portishead - everything they release
Massive Attack - "Mezzanine" and "Protection"
Shpongle - Are You Shpongled
Pixies - everything they ever released
Coil - Love's Secret Domain
Jimi Hendrix - Eectric Ladyland

I could go on and on, but I'll stop there. already you either think I have no taste or great taste, depending on what music you like.

there's a bunch of stuff I have discovered in the last 3 years or so, some of which will end up in this list. Calexico is one. I can't choose a particular album yet which are my favourites by these bands, so they aren't listed.

I managed to keep my children from finding out Mom went wild until my oldest granddaughter was watching a documentary of Woodstock with us. Sure enough, a clip of me was shown and she pointed at the tv and cried "There's Grammy!". Busted!! I didn't use any drugs though, I kept on most of my clothes...most of the time.

Ok, so there's a saying, it goes something like this. "There's a time and a place for everything, and it's called 'college'". You're telling me that you went to Woodstock and passed on the skinnydipping and the brown acid? Hell, I mean, seeing John Sebastian live, or the Who, that's great, but you should have made losing your car for a semester worth the trouble. ;)

Ok, so there's a saying, it goes something like this. "There's a time and a place for everything, and it's called 'college'". You're telling me that you went to Woodstock and passed on the skinnydipping and the brown acid? Hell, I mean, seeing John Sebastian live, or the Who, that's great, but you should have made losing your car for a semester worth the trouble. ;)

The skinny dipping I did...that's why I lost my car. Though I swear it was the only way to get all the mud and crud off. The acid I left alone. I didn't like some of what I saw so I figured why mess with it. As for the music...Hendrix was the best though I really loved Joplin, and Country Joe, and Santana...and Canned Heat....Cocker....well, almost all of them.

Saw them live and got the cd. Very fine sound. If you're into Taj Mahal, when you check the divas, you really can't miss out Irma Thomas!

At risk of dating myself, I would like to add:

Santana - Abraxas
Doors - Strange Days
Stones - Beggar Banquet
Clapton - Riding with the King (BB King)
Fleetwood Mac _ Tusk
Taj Mahal - everything he does
Eric Johnson - Venus Isle
Eagles - Long Run
Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Tarkus
Arlo Guthrie - Alice's Restaruant

Suddenly I have the urge to go find my old love beads.

Have any of you checked out Zap Mama? Strange, but I kind of like their sound.

You can date yourself... it' called going stag. ;)

There wasn't anything bad about the acts at Woodstock. As for the skinnydipping, hey, there's nothing wrong with that either. I personally think it's a bit of a rare treat to be able to do it in daylight, and I don't see much sense in bathing suits anyway.

I would have loved to be there, or the first Glastonbury or Reading festival. Hell, I'd still like to hit Lollapalooza one day, or Burning Man. The moment hasn't passed yet.

It was just quite impressive until I noticed Aphex Twin. Now it's so impressive I have to go and find out about those 2 bands mentioned which were unknown to me...

I'm just curious, which two?

Cocteau Twins and Goldfrapp. Front242 is a bit unkown too. If I remember correctly, it's industrial? Sounds familiar but I'm not sure...

And who on earth is Maria Carey? Is she one of those women who screech and wail a lot, wobbling all round the note without actually hitting it? They seem rather popular at the moment from what I hear.

Haha, that's heaps funny..
Yet I can't help but note how lucky you are.

Classic I own: Never Mind The Bollocks Here Are The Sex Pistols, just bought it today :D

Goldfrapp is definitely worth a listen. Actually, a look, too. Here's the video for Train

The Cocteau Twins are very good too, and I'd recommend maybe checking into Four Tet. I like the song No More Mosquitos.

I don't know that industrial is the word I'd use for Front242, but I guess a lot of people might. Industrial always makes me think of bands like Ministry, einsturzende Neubauten, stuff like that. although one of the early Ministry albums does share a major resemblance to the kind of stuff Front242 make, so there we go.

amongst the people I knew when I was getting into it, it was always referred to as "cyberpunk" music, whatever that meant :p (I'm not much one for labelling music, or any art, if at all possible, though it can make it difficult to discuss it.)

if you know Skinny Puppy (who probably deserve to be on my list, along with Frank Zappa, Morphine, Talking Heads, Dead Can Dance, Depeche Mode [the period from Some Great Reward up to Violator], and many others who got left off, all have albums deserving to be on the list alongside the rest,) them and Frontline Assembly are along the same vein as Front242.

Cocteau Twins did the range from Gothic (their first 3 albums or so) to ethereal pop (their last few.) I've had people dismiss the goth stuff as, well, goth, and the pop stuff as, well, pop..........but I still love them. The last two albums had several tracks I don't think are particularly good, interspersed with soem I think are just wonderful.

Goldfrapp is one of my top discoveries of recent years. hard to describe music, the first album is a mix of old style (think, big-band, showtunes even maybe, but nothing like Portishead) mixed with modern electronica, while the second has a more eighties synth pop (again, think depeche mode and contemporaries, mixed with late 90's/early 2000's electronica.)
Of course, that's just my description, and someone else will probably be able to say "I think they sound like this."

The problem I have with hard rock is that nobody can sing to save their lives! I prefer people who actually have a voice:

Mariah Carey
Whitney Houston
Paula Abdul
Sarah Brightman
Celine Dion
Amy Lee (Evanescence)
etc...

Now if you're just rating on voice quality then you might have hit on something with Whitney Houston. Otherwise you have to look a lot deeper than these pop singers. For my money, in the future, keep an eye on Fantasia. She has a voice!

Yeah, but gimme someone who can do more than stand there and sing. Eric Clapton, Phil Collins (I've tried drumming & singing, it ain't easy), I could go on FOREVER. Also, gimme someone whose music won't put me to sleep.

No exception. AC/DC makes the rest seem like Pink Floyd... from the peak years, "Welcome to the Machine" and "Dark Side of the Moon"...

ah, yeah, Four Tet. I have his last two albums (tried to get the first and was told it is out of print.) definitely lovely stuff, and should have been on my list.

and I can't believe I forgot Morphine from my list. I own every album they have done (sadly there will be no more, since Mark Sandman died.)
particularly the albums "Yes" and "The Night"

My music opinion changes every day pretty much. Currently it's either Nightwish - Once, or Silverchair - Diorama (love the use of the orchestra! :D ). I also like Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun. And Jeff Buckley. Also Miles Davis. And John Coltrane... *stops now*

Quite clearly, you don't. Never heard of Nightwish then? The vocals easily beat Amy Lee's poor imitation. And humour me - how much "hard rock" have you heard?

Personal opinion … AC/DC is the closest there but I much prefer some of the other listed bands
Among them

Pink Floyd
Bread
Zeppelin
Chicago
Steppenwolf
JoJo Gunn

(As clasics)

Much prefer modern rock but they are good (anything rock/metal … well anything not country post 1999 is alright by me)

my idea of "classics" in the appearently intended context of 20th century popular music would be topped by moody blue's 'days of future past'.

unless this list is limited to no more then a single generation past.

of the current crop i would go with anni defranco or even cosmic wobble.

where are the real classics of popular music in any decade of the past five?

yes; tales from topographic oceans

anything with/by rich wakeman or klaus shultze in it

going back a bit to my own 'ancient day'
how about bob dylan's arround the world in a dirty gondola?
or anything by jefferson airplane, jethro tull, joan biaz, buffy st marie, carol king, joni mitchel, ...

hmmm

cream's disraili gears
vinila fudge's hot fudge
iron butterfly's 'heavy'

tangarine dream, emerson lake and palmer, electric light orchestra, ...

pink floyd's dark side of the moon, or iron man

ian anderson/jethro tull's beggar's banquit or aqualung

i could go on and on and on and on

'classic'ness (meaning expression of ideal form) really is in the eye of the beholder

we decide what 'form' is 'ideal'

or to quote the repreve from knights in white satin:
"cold hearted orb that ruels the night
turns yellow grey and red to white
yet we decide which is right
and which is
an illusion"
