I have a question... and this applies to the celebrities that support the Republicans too.

What is it that makes a celebrities opinion any more valid than your or mine? What is it about a persons talent in acting, singing, movie making, music that makes their opinion any more valid than someone who's talent lay elsewhere?

Why is it that celebrities (seem to at least) hold so much more "power" in a political arena?

Because they have a larger audience “influence” they are broadcast into almost every home in America

I don’t think their opinions necessarily MATTER more but they do cause a bigger influence

In a word ... money. Their opinion doesn't mean more, they just have greater access to the media in which to voice their opinion.

Ah ok, as UpwardThrust said it.. influence.

As long as people understand that no matter what side of the political spectrum a celebrity supports... the celebrities opinion is in no way superior to their own.

Exactly … and just as likely to be flawed (if there is such a thing as a correct opinion ... I dont think there is)

Rage Against The Machine
U2
Michael Franty and Spearhead (nice anti Bush song :fluffle: )

And many, many more, problem is that it is a verry long list for the Democrats, must be about 80 % of all celebs and a very short list of has beens for the Reps.

Theres a ton of ppl I missed, I was using a couple of lists that are in alphabetical order. As you can see most of the celebrities and bands are from the first few letters of the alphabet.

As to why the are important, personally I really couldnt careless about celebrities. I am just trying to portray a fair view by giving the democrat list to contrast with the republican list. Whether celebrities actually influence you is another matter. There are some who do make a real difference though, people such as Bono who I think should get a nobel prize for humanitarianism. People such as Bono have the power to influence many and unlike most who just throw themselves behind a candidate or say they are anti-war, he actually does stuff to make the world better. People like him can't get enough credit, its about time rich, famous celebrities really get behind a cause and do something with their money and influence to make the world better. Now I know there are many others, I just mentionned Bono because I'm a huge fan of what he does.

He's just ruining the list if you ask me. This guy ruins any movie he's in. Now theres one less reason to hate him - at least he doesn't go Republician.

Just wanted to add to this (in a way) - some celebrities champion a political party. Others try to gather publicity for specific causes. You'd be surprised how many people (esspecially young adults) are swayed on an issue just because of the views of their favorite celebrity. (No I don't have figures to back this up.)

Some scientists (no I don't have any links and I don't think it's a majority view) claim that our brains are hard wired to admire people just because we've heard of them and don't know them. Once upon a time people became famous for accomplishing something great like conquering a country or something, but now we have people who are only famous for being famous. Take a look at Mel Gibson and Billy Baldwin. They're only pro Bush because, just like them, he was a guy who was a drug-addicted alcoholic and rather than find treatment he turned to a psycho religion. And yet these are endorsments that Bush is happy to have.

... [Eminem] actually cares?
Surprisingly, yes. One of his new songs, on the Encore album...coming soon...distinctly has the words "Fuck Bush" in it.

I don't think any artist with a Parental Advisory sticker on his or her CD can vote conservative without being called a hypocrite. I say conservative because it was conservative Democrats under Clinton who pushed that legislation through (Lieberman, Tipper Gore, etc.)

I'm pretty sure Kevin Spacey (does anyone else think he is as good an actor as I do?) is very much a Kerry supporter.

May want to look into that.

Also, I'd be willing to bet a child that Ani D'Franco is a singer who supports Kezza ("Self Evident"- some parts of that song were really good)

Like all "Goed" people. The bad side of humanity (Stalin, Hitler and other Pinochet or the people that lack knowledge) is for the evil (W).

It is simple as that, and the reps know that they are bad and are the cause of the missery.

Hmmm, I think that Martin Sheen is a democrat to.
A pitty that we Republican fascist and other liars don't have that kind of decent people on our side.

Why does not he listen to us  Altough we try to by that kind of people, it still does not work to buy real people

Hmm strange that some people listen to moral instead of $.
Perhaps that is why he is a democrat and not on our side. Damn, normally we can by anyone or fraud each election  .

Damn you Martin, you commie bastard :(

Surprisingly, yes. One of his new songs, on the Encore album...coming soon...distinctly has the words "Fuck Bush" in it. Man, I hate Eminem, and I think putting out a song to influence the election is unfair use of corporate funds to sway the election... how is this different from Sinclair, now?

Clip from his song if anyone cares to listen to his trash, http://www.theregular.org/mp3s/Eminem_Mosh_Clip.mp3

Anyhow, you wanna talk use of corporate funds to sway the election, I guess we have to ban the entire genre of country music. :p

Eminem doesnt own radio stations and is not forcing stations to play his song. Unlike Sinclair who owns TV stations and is forcing them to show the Kerry documentary. There is a difference. Also, Eminem is an artist, we argue our opinion through words and discussion, he does through song. Is that problematic?

Bono
U2

This isn't true. When asked, Bono declined to endorse either candidate this year, on the grounds that he was not American. He was on Bill O'Reilly's show publicising debt relief.

Another question: can someone be a Democrat if they're not American?
