According to the Mariam-Webster Dictionary:

Anti-Semitism

Main Entry: an·ti-Sem·i·tism
Pronunciation: "an-ti-'se-m&-"ti-z&m, "an-"tI-
Function: noun
: hostility toward or discrimination against Jews as a religious, ethnic, or racial group

Semite

Main Entry: Sem·ite
Pronunciation: 'se-"mIt, esp British 'sE-"mIt
Function: noun
Etymology: French sémite, from Semitic Shem, from Late Latin, from Greek SEm, from Hebrew ShEm
1 a : a member of any of a number of peoples of ancient southwestern Asia including the Akkadians, Phoenicians, Hebrews, and Arabs b : a descendant of these peoples
2 : a member of a modern people speaking a Semitic language

Now, I must ask, why is anti-semitism only directed to Jews when semites are Arabs, Jews, Akkadians, Phoenicians, and their descendants? Anti-Semitism should refer to all the above peoples not just to the Jews or the word or definition must be changed so that it is correct. What do you think?

I have thought the same thing at times - my guess is that it's sort of a cultural thing for Semite to refer to Jews and not the other peoples.

Because nobody gives a shit about Arabs?

Also, because the Jews have possibly been the most discriminated and persecuted group in the world and they had to have some kind of scholarly name for it...

It's not.

There is a difference between anti-semitism and antisemitism.

Becuase Arabs don't bitch all day about how hard they have it. Remember kiddies only minorities can be discriminated against. And whatever the Jews do to the Arabs is OK. But the holocaust was horrible.

Does anyone smell hypocrisy?

Have to be nice, protect them from the "tyranny of the majority".

There is a difference between anti-semitism and antisemitism.

What difference would that be then?

Would that be the dash?

And are they pronounced differently? Maybe you could write it with phonetics.

The only irony here is that you live in maybe one of the most educated and free countries in the world and you are still as ignorant and adamant as hell.

Whatever the Jews do to the Arabs is okay? Whatever Israel has done to the "Arabs" has been in response to what the Arabs have done to them. And it's not Israel's fault that Palestinian terrorists hide in residential areas because then they think that Israel won't get them. Check your history.

Yes, as a Jew, I find myself bitching and moaning 24/7 about how hard I have it as a minority. *I hope you understood that was sarcasm*

And the difference between Israel and the Palestinians is that the Israelis biggest complaint is that hundreds of people are being blown up by terrorists every day, and the Palestinian's is that there's a wall separating the Israelis from them which is apparently apartheid. There are plenty of Arab-Israelis. It's not apartheid. It's to stop the terrorists from murdering innocents! And by the way, an EU rep from the Middle East has recently said that the wall is WORKING.

Sorry for getting off topic, guys. Just felt I had to clear things up because of the whiny little Jew I am.

While the roots of anti-semitism can be traced back to roman times, through to Martin Luther's paper in Germany and even Shakespeare's merchant of venice takes note of it.

The actual term Anti-semitism was an election platform in 19th century Germany, it was the party who constructed the term that had it mean opposition to Jews rather than the other semite races, hence why it has stuck around specifically in reference to jews.

Interesting, thanks for that info.

but does that make what the Arabs did first right? Or are both lacking?
There's a huge difference between terrorism and the military though.

I really don't know enough to comment.

You could blame whoever started it, and then think of the other as seeking retribution. . . but then it never ends. Although I hear Afarat has some dodgey policy still concerning Israel, something about still wanting to exterminate them. So if that's the case, then I can understand why they're sending tanks down the Gaza strip.

But that wall idea was great!

We need one along the boarders of North Africa and Turkey.
