I think it may have been down to Bismarck and a German attempt to gain control of some of South Africa.

they still have blood over that after all these years?
I was wondering cause we are having an international boxing championship on my post and we have to keep the Germans and South Africans seperated cause the people in charge are afraid they will start world war III in Arizona.

If it is that then I don't see why not.
Think of the north south divide in some people in the US even though the civil war ended ages ago.

but they both had one thing in common:
they both used to be racist empires.

Um, I think it's just a boxing thing...
Cos I'm South African and we're just fine with Germans.(I'm of Indian descent btw) South Africans are more likely to have a problem with Americans. :p

I have two south-african chums, and never heard of any stress with us germans on a regular basis.
However, talking about boxing, some seven or eight years ago there was a big fight of Botha vs. Schulz. Botha, the Southafrican, came into the ring doped and won by points against Schulz. After his doping test was positive he was not disqualified, but rather the fight was deemed not valid and a rematch made a half year later. This sure caused an outrage, because in nearly every other sport discipline it would have been a win by disqualification for Schulz, a ban of Botha for the next two years from any international events etc. Because the SA boxing officials did nothing to punish Botha there might still be some resentments.

i dont have any problem with south africans.
its not exactly my favorite vacation country cause of their crime rate. to be exact id rather go to america than to south afrika and get mugged there. i dont like or hate SA ... its just a country far away *shrug*
thinking about that part of SA was once a german colony, maybe they still have some hard feeling about it? although it would seem rather weird when you think that they were a british colony for far longer time. im just speaking about possiblitys here.

What a nonsense.
I'm German and I never heard of any tension between Germany and South Afrika. OK, in the 80ies trade was banned because of the regieme, but this was an effect of an UN resolution.

Why don't germans and south africans like each other?
Couldnt have been WWI. We fought for the allies and tried to lighten the impact of Versallies, believing it to be excessive.
As for Namibia, we granted them independance. Couldnt have been that either.

Actually I live in Australia now... :p But I WAS from Durban.
And hey, I totally understand the SABC sucking up to Cuba. I mean, who helped the freedom struggle? Certainly not certain other regimes.... :p
And I speak a little Afrikaans- it tends to come back when I go back. Also a teeny bit of Zulu.
Sala Kahle :D
Oh and on the Namibia issue. Yes, "we" (I shudder before associating myself with the apartheid regime) gave them their independence after overstaying "our" welcome by like 50 years. *shifty*

I was raised with Afrikaans so ive been lucky enough to retain a lot... i would have loved to have learned Xhosa but we emigrated to the US too soon, how often do you guys go back?

I've been back twice and I've lived here for 6 years. It's scary to be honest- damn crime problem.
That and I don't know if I could go back to live(even f the crime problem disappeared)- the constitution may be the most progressive in the world, but in many cases the people are still recovering from years of puritanism. :p

Who says that Germans and South Africans do not like each other?
