We watched a movie in Econ today about a girl who is four that paints "Abstract art" and actually gets paid like 12000 dollars for it. I'm happy for the parents cause that's a lot o money and a good return on the whole "Kid" investment, but this also makes a bold statement about art. Mainly that it's dumb. So I've posted my own "abstract art." feel free to buy it from me for a billion earth dollars. Voila!

I read an article about her...well if it floats your boat...

Some abstract art I really like though! Jackson Pollock?

And I totally agree with you on the poem thing. I cannot tell you how many people I know who claim to be depressed and angsty and write the same freaking things over and over again that have no artistic meaning and require no creativity and it's basically a zillion lines of crap based off of some stupid song by Good Charlotte or Sum 41 or some other crappy band like that.

Doth I protest too much?

There's nothing wrong with abstract art. I think they should combine anime and surrealism to create surreal anime.

abstract art is NOT fucking art and NO ONE shoudl get paid for doing it, unless its really good ( i honestly did a good piece of it but its on my old shitty computer, and it was abstract that it was nothing, but it was mostly shapes and was alot of symmetrical stuff)

Not at all, I know what you mean about the poetry man. This girl got this "special notebook" on like sunday and she already wasted the whole thing with her miserable depression poetry! Aaaargh! I hate it! I wanted to puke.

And yes there is some abstract art that is cool but who can deny that this is way more awesome?

Abstract art has more flexibility than realistic art in my view.

Some abstract art is about expressionism, but the majority of it is artists interpreting the word abstract for dollar signs.

Let's say it together class. 1...2...3... READ!

As a matter of fact these WERE thrown together in MS Paint.

Also, I quite clearly stated that it was a video about this girl.

jeeze. Way to go Sherlock.

And another thing, what is it with artists anyway? I just don't get it. In art class the teacher is a total fascist! WEverything has to be done a certain way or else it's an auto F. She ripped a girls paper up and siad it was crap! Funny, but sad.

She'd totally own any "abstract" artist she saw. :D

I actually like Malevitch, Mondrian and MirĂ³...
And dislike old masters like Ilja Repin, Vermeer and Reynolds.
But I'm not saying everybody should agree with me. That's great about arts. noone is right, there are just different opinions.

Abstract art is not art? A painting of some squares and circles isn't art but a painting of an apple is? wtf are you on?

Is all muslim art "not fucking art" ?
Is aboriginal art art when it is a picture of a kangaroo but not art when it is the dots and patterns part?

What is your definition of art such that abstract art isn't art?

And almost nobody gets paid for doing it. Being an abstract artist isn't a job like "I'm going to the office to paint some abstract art". Artists *sell* their work to people who *want* to *buy* it. Do you want to make it illegal to buy abstract art?

Some people do get paid for it by the way. Damien Hirst has had, at times, teams of people producing his spot paintings and spin paintings. If I wanteds such a painting i'd do it myself for 50 quid of materials rather than pay 20 grand for a hirsty one.

EDIT: the three works posted by the thread originator are meritless. copying a mondrian is much easier than making those, and has much more pleasing results.

What kind of douche proclaims that they made the only good example of abstract art?

The idea of calling abstract art "not art" defies the very nature of what art is, which is free, creative expression. If a person wishes to convery a particular message, and cannot do so through realism, abstraction is the only method possible. You are also mixing terms: Jackson Pollock, for example, is did NOT make abstract art; he made non-objective art. Real abstract art is an abstraction of something, be it a physical object, motion, an idea, or whatever. Would you say that Picasso's "Guernica" is not art? That painting draws out more expression, more feeling, and more EMOTIONAL realism than any stiffly photorealistic painting I've ever seen. Realism takes talent, I will admit to that, and it can be used well to express a message. However, the range of expression given to abstract art far surpasses anything you can achieve with realism.

As to the original subject. I don't know the story, but it sounds like the parents are just trying to make some cash. A four-year-old doesn't have anything deep to express. That's the real test: what the artist aims to express, not the way through which they do so (although that, of course, must be taken into consideration as well when evaluating a piece).

(Daajenai is a fine arts major) :P

i made an example as to when abstract art would count as art

when it is geometrical and symmetrical, if it doesnt have an actual picture in it, abstract art should not be counted as art for the most part

ive seen what people call "abstract art" and i know people buy it. abstract artists WILL die laughing.

Well you can sell it for thousands of dollars if you can find anyone willing to buy. This girl did find people willing to pay $12000 for her artistic products. Isn't it called free-market capitalism?

abstract art is NOT fucking art and NO ONE shoudl get paid for doing it, unless its really good ( i honestly did a good piece of it but its on my old shitty computer, and it was abstract that it was nothing, but it was mostly shapes and was alot of symmetrical stuff)
Well if a market exists for abstract art why shouldn't people be allowed to make and sell it? You're supposed to be a liberal?

Not at all, I know what you mean about the poetry man. This girl got this "special notebook" on like sunday and she already wasted the whole thing with her miserable depression poetry! Aaaargh! I hate it! I wanted to puke.

What's wrong with writing depressing poetry? Should we ban it because you don't like it? You don't have to read it.

I deny that that is way more awesome than this:
http://monet.physik.unibas.ch/~hegner/kandinsky6.jpg

Your example painting is just a picture of a boat. Yes it takes technical ability, but very little creativity or thought, really. Wassily Kandinsky was one of the first abstract artists, he had to think up a lot of new ideas.

Let them laugh then. Does every product that is on the market have to meet your approval?

There are lots of products out there that I think are dumb, but I'm not saying they shouldn't be sold.
