This is a stupid debate. I don't even know why I started it. :headbang:

No. It's stupid, pointless, and a waste of time and money, but it doesn't infringe on anyone's rights, so leave it be.

No - while I hate some cheerleading (tho some I no arent shallow), freedom of expression/assembly is legal, and banning it would infringe upon that (triggering the slippery slope argument)

Why? Not that I'm any cheerleader-type myself, but is there any point? Besides, think of all the football fans who would be dissappointed at the lack of exposed skin at the games? While I wouldn't agree that cheerleading is a true sport, I don't see why it should be outlawed.

No, it's a valid question, and a nice break from the damn Kerry/Bush/UN/US threads. If this is what it takes to get that crap to stop, then may we have a fucking billion cheerleading threads.

If you vote for Bush, he and his Christian fundamentalist cronies will outlaw cheerleading.

He was a cheerleader himself, so I doubt that. :)

Yeah, although on the other side of the coin that just meant he had to hold girls wearing miniskirts above his head...

Bush was a male cheerleader... and now he wants to remove all sex education except for 'abstinence education'.

At least he's consistent... a constant policy of packaging the underage female for reproduction.
Cannot think of a name

Look, if you remove cheerleading then there's a whole section of fetishes that have to find a new home....and I'm not about to start fantasizing about the mascot..........

......I mean, nothing........

Oh for heavens sake. Why are we even having this debate? Is there a point?

Eh, cheerleading's pretty competitive, if you're ever been to a competition... I should know... I used to date a cheerleader back in the day.

I'm familiar with the sport, but I still think this debate is utterly pointless. You can't just decide to make a sport legal or illegal. It just is, whether you like it or not and its not as though cheerleading has killed anyone. Some may find it annoying, others might love it, some might think it breeds bad character. Irregardless whether you like the sport or not you can't decide that it should be illegal based on that. Thats why I don't think there is any sound argument for this debate (for or against), thus it is pointless in my mind.

My disagreement is over the fact that it packages teenage girls to be more 'sexual' and 'accesible' to the average sport-audience, which is largely teen-and-older males.

It is, in my opinion, an institutionalised method of selling underage sex.

That may be true. I also think that the sport is based upon the view by some that women should be subordinate to males, since cheerleader cheer male athletes, but that is my opinion. I'm sure if you were to go up to a cheerleader they would say something entirely different. Still those that choose to watch it and/or participate can and those who don't want to don't have to. So I still think that a debate of whether cheerleading should be legal or illegal is pointless, though I might think that the essence of the sport endorses values, which I think are erroneous, iniquitous, and place women in a stereotypical role. I may also think what it promotes is crude and insulting, but those are still no platforms from, which to deem a sport so horrible that is should be deemed illegal (hmm...maybe it is). The point I'm trying to make is all this is subjective.

-and if we were to deem this sport illegal, how many other sports would we have to also deal with similiarly?

Only in the case of high school cheerleading.
