Iraq is supposedly run by a separate government from the one that runs the US, so can make different laws.

Different Constitutions, and Iraqis aren't exactly proving themselves ready to have guns stability-wise.

I never said that. I was suggesting that they were hypocrites because they are occupying Iraq and they have made it illegal for the Iraqis to carry guns, even though let Americans do it. *shrug*

What do you think occupying means? They're prisoners, like it or not. When we leave, hopefully soon, they can make whatever laws they want.

Because, Iraqis kill more Americans with them. ;)

because banning guns works in an semi-civilized society where everyone owns an ak-47 and is engaged in ever going turmoil and war but doesnt work in a civilized society

Well, first of all, Iraq is not part of the US, in case you hadn't noticed, so there is absolutely no reason why you should expect the same laws to be in place there.

Secondly, the possession of guns is legal in Iraq, with certain restrictions -

Google time: here we go:

"U.S. officials, while describing the response as light, were quick to explain that the goal was never to disarm Iraqis, but principally to inform them that banned weapons must not be carried in public. As of Sunday, it will be illegal for Iraqis to carry weapons in public without a permit. Nor can they possess or hide machine guns, high explosives, weapons designed to destroy armored vehicles or aircraft or arms that fire ammunition larger than 7.62mm."

Although this report dates from last year none of the reports concerning the recent amnesties indicate that the legal situation has changed.

It is about this point in most threads concerning gun control that someone pops up to say that the first step in the totalitarianisation of Nazi Germany was the introduction of gun control measures... I wonder how they will react to the situation in Iraq?

So Australia isn't a civilized country? How sweet of you to let me know. Tell me, when should I expect the next barbarity?

After that remark - maybe it's because people get upset if Iraqis are shot?

because Americans hunt deer, Iraqis hunt people.

Don't worry, so long as they haven't banned fox hunting, it's okay. That's the dead give away.
Oh, or banning duelling.
Or possibly roadbuilding - maybe rebuilding Iraq is the smoking gun?

No, I was refering to the people that try and represent gun control in any form as being the first step which inevitably leads to a totalitarian dictatorship.
