How would you decide?

Alright, here's a question I find a little more interesting than those other gay posts:

Let's assume people are 'born gay,' as most people apparently think.

You're a happily married man or woman, hoping to conceive. Your doctor tells you that you are (or your wife is) pregnant. Now, you're both middle-aged, so you're eager to have an amniocentesis performed to determine whether the child will have any abnormalities. Now, in this universe, an amniocentesis can be performed as early as a few days, before you've invested much, emotionally, in the pregnancy.

So, the test comes back, and the baby is negative for retardation. However, in this universe, since homosexuality is considered a born-trait, much like hair or eye color, the doctor informs you that your child has homosexuality as a dominant trait. What do you do? Keep the child, knowing its 'flaw,' or have it suctioned and come back next week, perhaps to avoid an assumed predjudice they would face in life as a homosexual, or simply out of a personal desire to see the family line continue?

I don't consider homosexuality to be a "flaw", only a difference.

That's why I said 'flaw,' like so. You're given the choice, either way.

Edit:

This isn't an "Is homosexuality good or bad" poll, just a scenario where you have a choice.

what your saying is barely impossible...

And cruel to... and always remeber that gay people has the same rights as any other citizen...

And they pay taxes as well...

like most i would keep it.

however the concept is bizzare as anyone with a passing training in psycology can see that it's not a genetic trait.

Like most things in humans sexuality is not "clean cut".
we're all capable of homosexual feelings in the right enviroment, given the right factors. (mainly attitude of parents toward the child's sexuality)

Our gene's simply define our "chances" of being Gay. They give some people a disposition toward homosexuality or bisexuality.

But it's the environment that has the greatest effect, i've got so many gay friends these days, some of whom know more about psycology that i do.

they all agree on a common thread in their psycological history, a thread that was established so early in their lives it would appear genetic to someone who didn't know their past.

sorry i got a little off topic but most gay people i know see it as a choice and get offended when people suggest they had no say in the matter. so this is just me fighting the cause on their behalf

It's perfectly possible. People do it today.

This scenario is no more or less cruel than a regular abortion following amniocentesis, you just have a little more information.

This is exactly the opposite of what most on NS believe. In fact, most, I gather, would consider it an insult or bigotry to think that homosexuals ever had a choice to their orientation. This poll is more for those with this belief, the great majority on this forum.

A shame, to be sure.

Every one of my gay friends says it was never a choice for them, that they struggled with it, denied it, and ultimately accepted it.

They would be offended if anyone suggested they had a say in the matter.

I suppose bisexuals can "choose" to be gay or straight...but that seems more along the lines of suppressing one urge by paying more attention to another.

...

in ANY case, back to the topic of this thread...abortion is a choice you make. If you want to abort because your baby would be dark-haired, or blue-eyed, go ahead. I'd say you are a bigoted hypocrite if you normally would oppose abortion, but if you are an equal-opportunity abortionist, then go ahead.

Your thread brings up another issue...that of hand-picking your children. In your scenario, we could do it through abortion. In real life, 50 years from now, we could do it through in vitro fertilization, testing of embryos, and implanting of the embryo with the "best" genes.

Everyone would grow up to be tall, smart, perfectly muscled and tanned superhumans of perfection.

Would suck for us normal people. :p

if my child in any way should turn gay/or been born gay i would maybe just need some time to accept it...
