Is the American Government slowly becoming "Big Brother"?

If you don't know what I am talking about, read George Orwell 1984.

It was Big Brother under our first communist President, Lincoln, and ever since Wilson, it has done nothing but continue to expand exponentially, becoming the bloated, sprawling, omnipresent, all-pervasive, bureaucratic leviathan it is today.

Most of you sound like rebellious children. If you don't like what you see happening, get up off your dead asses and DO something about it!

I agree that the American government is fast becoming Big Brother. But we're 30-50 years behind Europe.

Turning into? No.
Has been for decades? Yes.

And the funniest thing is: we are using the most watched media to express our thoughts on the matter. *watch me typoe this*

It's been big brother ever since Lincoln decided that the South had to stay.

America is becoming like George Orwell's "1984". The Democratic Party has consistently voted in to many laws that govern a citizen's livelihood; from gun-control to simply wearing your seatbelt, and the Republican Party has initiated National Security programs that monitor everything from post office mail to the internet. An American's salary is cut in half, or at times most of it has gone into taxes. Eventually in another hundred years people will be working in near slavery conditions.

The Canadian government is too busy quibbling like children to implement a "big brother" system... I just hope they don't get their act together. But, yes, I do believe that it is alive and well in the US.

I don't see why that's such a bad thing. We have plastic drivers liceneses here. I think it's good, otherwise my G1 would be in tatters - heck, most of the cards in my wallet are in bad shape. Hell, my OHIP card is almost completely useless; it'll need to be replaced (yes, it's plastic). So, I do see the benefit of having a plastic driver's license.

Not only is America resembling 1984 with the government, but by the media as well. People just spit out what they hear on the news that night and forget about what was said last week (unless it happens to degrade this politician or that public official). Frankly, I'm still trying to figure out how we went from going after Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan to "liberating" Iraq of Saddam.
