Sorry if this has already been a topic on here, I don't normally post on here but felt so strongly about this that I felt I should.

I just read that the FBI recently shut down an independent media outlet -Indymedia internet- with offices in London. Nobody was arrested anyone or charged with any crime yet the media outlet was silenced.

the whole story can be found on BBC online: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3732718.stm

To me this smacks of a decline from free speech into an Orwellian world, maybe I'm a little over the top but if we accept this from them what else will they censor or destroy?

I'd like to know other people's views on the matter, especially if there's anyone out their in NationStates who can defend these actions.

I think if you feel the way i do about this you should try to halt this affront to the 'free' world by signing the petition started by IndyMedia - http://solidarity.indymedia.org.uk/

The FBI has been doing this sort of thing from the moment of its conception. in the 1910s they effectively shut down the American Communist Party. in the sixties and seventies a branch of the FBI called COINTELPRO (Counter intelligence Program) managed to infiltrate, sabatage, and eventually assassinate the leaders of the black panther party (black people for equal rights) Barely a ripple in the media, because the government had already falsely prtrayed them all as violent uncontrolled thugs. the party ran a breakfast for kids program, so the FBI told the parents that the black panthers were trying to poison their kids with veneral disease. Amazing isn't it.
