So I got iTunes and my iPod working and everything. I've put all my .mp3 files into my iPod but I have a problem with my .wma files. It seems they are protected and I can't mess with them

How do I convert protected .wma files into .mp3 or AAC format? Is there a way to do this?

Any help is appreciated.

IIRC, don't take my word for it, I believe there's a way for you to protect files in the WMP application settings... so, I'd think if you did that, you might not be able to copy them to the iPod/iTunes... I can transfer my .wma files to my RCA Lyra just fine, but, I have that copy protection turned off... so, I don't know what would happen if I turned it on.

Anything else. Even an old school discman is better than spending an arm and a leg for an iPod.

Some WMA files are digitally encrypted aka DRM; Digital Rights Management. For info about this search on Google for "DRM Trusted Computing FAQ" and read the FAQ by Ross Anderson. Its translated to several languages.

The problem is that your player needs a key to play such file and Apple's fomrat is not compatible with Microsofts.

In short, i'd advice to stay away from these DRMed files. Nothing wrong with buying music online but it can be perfectly done without this crap. Example: http://www.allofmp3.com btw AAC files from iTunes have the same problem but these are crackable. Search for e.g. "PlayFair".
