Anyone know anything about IQ tests?
I'm organising an IQ test for a number of teachers at my school for charitable purposes. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me a) if there are any internet IQ tests worth taking and b) if not, where I can order some (in the UK) relatively inexpensively.
I tried www.iqtest.com (inventive name, no?). I think it might be a little overoptimistic. Either that or I'm smarter/luckier than I've given myself credit for. If anyone can comment on reliability of results of that one, I'd appreciate it.
Show them how biased these tests are by offering questions they could not possibly know.
there are NO internet IQ test that are anything close to accurate. unfortunately, if you really want actual IQ results you can't just hand them a test...you must have a trained test administrator who can give a comprehensive exam. the simple IQ booklet tests usually give results that are as much as 45 points different from what a real test would give, and that's enough to make the difference between "retarded" and "gifted."

lol, or give science teachers abstract questions and art teachers logic questions!
Show them how biased these tests are by offering questions they could not possibly know.I'm really not here to discuss the overall worth of IQ tests. Please just assume that, rather than any level of intelligence, I'm simply looking to test how good people are at doing IQ tests.

I took an IQ test really drunk once and got like a 32.
It rocked.

What is it vaguely that trained administrators have to do that's different?

All I know is that IQ tests are designed for caucasian/Western males. (Don't know where to get any sorry, but I thought I'd mention it)

While it is true that you cannot get a real scientific IQ test without using a trained administrator (usually a psychologist), I think for your purposes you might be relatively happy with something from MENSA (http://www.mensa.org)
www.mensa.org
They are at least more reputable than your average Internet site that wants you to buy your "complete intelligence report" or something like that. Isn't that the scam?

Hmm. What do I know about IQ tests? They they're supposedly crap, and yet I love them anyway. And that someone once told me Einstein had the IQ of 35, proving how stupid they are, and yet I love them anyway. www.iqtest.com exaggerates the results ridiculously - everyone gets above average. In fact, someone posted a link and poll on this site around March and everyone got a result of at least 120. I got 180, and while I know I'm good at academics, test-taking, and general smarts, I very highly doubt it's to that degree, considering that average or median or whatever is 100.
I also echo Bottle for most of what she said, although I would argue that there are some online IQ tests worth taking, if you're just doing it for fun. Take the Emode and theSpark tests and then average them out, they seem accurate-ish to me.

Ok
"mensa" is a word used for university cafeteria's in Holland. So I thought perhaps...

Well, so far, all the teachers who I've signed up for it happen to be in that demographic, so it shouldn't be too dodgy.

One thing I particularly dislike about IQ tests is the assumption that cultural knowledge is an important part of IQ. I searched at random for an online test and found this one here:
http://www.eskimo.com/~miyaguch/titan.html
One need only have a look through the Verbal Analogies section to see how much of a stress is placed on bits of arcane cultural knowledge. Questions 18, 20, 22 and 23 are particularly good examples here. They have little to do with actual reasoning, and much to do with already having the experience of the subject matter to which they relate.
Edit: I am aware that this test is something of a non-standard one, but for illustrative purposes it makes the point more clearly than other more conventional tests.

You just have to make the average 100. So after they take it, divide the average score by the individual's. So if someone gets a score of 85% and the avg was 67%, they would get a 129 (meaning they are 29% smarter than the average). Of course, this won't be accurate because you need a larger cross-section of people to take it; it's only valid against the people who took it.
