Unfortunately, it couldn't.

There was a grevious breakdown of military discipline in Vietnam, and many war crimes were committed. That's no lie. The soldiers were put in an impossible situation, and expected to do the impossible, and all to many of them did things they will have trouble living with the rest of their lives. I will be very slow to criticize soldiers. But it is very important to examine the conduct of your nation in war.

And there are starting to be war crimes in Iraq. The prisoners were not the only ones abused in Abu Ghraib. I don't wish to minimize the horror the prisoners went through, but the soldiers who participated are going to have a hard time living with themselves, because they weren't monsters going in. Indeed, as I understand it it is this sort of thing that causes Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It is vitally important that military discipline is maintained and war chrimes not committed. Not only for the sake of the Iraqi people and the winning of this war, but also for the sake of your own soldiers. Abu Ghraib has recieved plenty of press. But there is another aspect of the war where I very much fear that discipline is not going to be present, and that is the secrurity personell coming over with private contractors. The way private contractors are used needs to be rethought.
