My friends and I are active duty in the US Navy and we have be wondering something for the longest amount of time. My friends and I are junior enlisted most of us are E-3 to E-5, now my friends who are E-5 (a petty officer second class for ye land lubbers :D ) sometimes with their paychecks have a hard time feeding their families mean while we have these stupid sports stars, who get payed insane amounts of money just because they can play a game? I mean I work hard for my paycheck everyday, Im a medic so Im working all day and I do real work, not run around some stadium with a ball and endorse ugly sneakers. Why do we pay these money grubbers so much?

P.S.- This excludes that one athlete that quit his job to join the army, I dont remember his name but I wish we had more men like him.

Sanquins, if CNN keeps the trend that they did with this war up, you guys might see wage increases. They're turning war into living room entertainment.

The reasons sports stars and movie actors and such get paid so much is because they generate a lot of profit. A good actor entertains millions of people and so millions of people want to pay their $7.50 to see the actor. The actor gets a slice of that. I think that the military should get stock options with companies like Haliburton. That'd make it fair.

Because most people are brainwashed consumer whores?

Say, now that's an idea!

I'm 60% sure that I am going to do AFROTC to pay for Graduate school (that's a little ways down the road).

Unfortunately, the law of supply and demand has a lot to do with it. Sports figures who are really good ( especially if they are a bit flamboyant ) will attract fans, fans pay money, advertisers pay money, the owners get richer, and the players demand a slice of the pie.

Another factor at work is the idea that an excellent warrior should be happy with awards and decorations, rather than being paid more for being good at what he ( or she ) does; it seems to smack of the mercenary.

One of the reasons I have such admiration for those of you now serving is that you do a difficult and often dangerous job for which you can never be paid "enough," and you do so at least in part for idealistic reasons. The true warrior in a democracy fights for the freedom of his people, the survival of his Country, and expects little more in return than the respect he earns.

We could never pay you enough money to adequately compensate you, but I for one feel it definitely should be more.

Yeah. It is interesting. These people who just play a game and a lot of them end up in some sort of scandal and yet you guys are out their risking your lives and actually doing something that deserves a lot of money. Wish there was something we could do.

PS - I would've joined the Navy, but I was kept out because of a thyroid operation I had done 6 years ago and I have to take daily medication for it.
My girlfriend is in the Army Reserve, but she goes active next September.

The point he is making is not that he isn't paid enough to be compensated, but that soldiers aren't hardly paid enough to eat. They're not worried about compensation so much. You can live without compensation, but not without food.

I've never been much of a spectator. Watching sports keep people dull witted. Why do they pay these guys so much money? Because rich people are naive.

And what do you do for entertainment? What soldiers shoot Iraqis and vice versa in green-vision on CNN?

I suppose that works. However...I only pay a dollar for my tickets. As soon as I stop getting to student price to see my Razorbacks play, I'll be hoping they're on TV more often. Although...this year they have already been on TV twice, and will be at least 3 more times...probably 7 times total by the end of the season.
