Sen. John Edwards, the Democratic vice presidential candidate, took a rare break from his trek through the battleground states Tuesday with a quick trip to Los Angeles and San Francisco.
"Remember: three more weeks, three more weeks,'' the North Carolina senator told more than 750 well-heeled supporters at the Yerba Buena Center on Tuesday evening.
The San Francisco event raised $1.5 million for the Democratic campaign, and an upbeat Edwards gave the partisan crowd what it wanted to hear. In a stinging attack on President Bush, Edwards previewed many of the points his running mate, Sen. John Kerry, will make tonight in the final presidential debate.
"George Bush is out of touch with what's happening in the real world,'' Edwards said. "He's out of touch with what's happening with jobs and the economy.''
Edwards talked about people who have lost their health insurance since Bush took office and others who are struggling to pay the soaring cost of premiums.
"As far as I can tell, the Bush health care plan for the past four years has been 'Don't get sick,' '' Edwards said.
The recent rise in gasoline prices has been "a tax on American consumers, '' Edwards said, that can only be remedied by trimming the country's use of foreign oil.
"Both the president and the vice president have deep ties to the oil industry,'' the senator said. "What is the chance that they'll do anything to move us away from our dependence on foreign oil? It's not going to happen.''
Edwards called the situation in Iraq "a mess'' and blamed it on Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.
"George Bush continues to say to the American people, 'Don't believe your own eyes. ... Everything is going well in Iraq,' '' he said. "The last two people in America who believe things are going well in Iraq are George Bush and Dick Cheney.''
For Edwards, it was a rare chance to spend time in a state where he and Kerry are running comfortably ahead of the GOP ticket. The respite was a brief one, however. Edwards flew from the battleground state of Colorado to Los Angeles for an appearance on "The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno to San Francisco for a 20-minute stop at the fund-raiser before heading to Oregon, another state viewed as a battleground.
"John and I know what needs to be done,'' Edwards said in San Francisco. "We just need a chance to do it.''
Talking with Leno at the late afternoon taping in Burbank, Edwards was in turns silly and serious while chatting about issues ranging from Iraq to chubby Secret Service agents.
Leno asked Edwards if he could beat the president in a foot race.
Edwards, who said he jogged about 5 miles Tuesday, reminded the audience he played football as a student. Bush, he noted, was on a cheering squad.
Bush "was on the side, with his pompons," Edwards said. "I don't know, can you run fast with those cheerleading outfits on?"
