US intelligence (or lack of it)

Now the US invaded Iraq with the help of friends Australian and UK to stop Saddam and his WMDs. Now we hear in the chaos of the fall of Iraq to the "Coalition of Willing", Iraqi nuclear plant facilities were somehow moved out to neighbouring nations despite the US supposedly being in control or endevouring to do so.

The UN inspectors knew of pre-invasion Iraqi nuclear plant facilities before leaving. During the US occupation, the UN inspectors did not have access to these facilities and somehow someone "stole" them under the occupying power's survellance.

Now, if you were looking for WMDs you'd secure the nuclear facilities and find any evidence there right? The UN knew about it, but did the US check? Did they ask the UN inspectors? God knows where all the nuclear material from these places went.

It's been all over the Australian news. Here's the CNN version.

Some equipment turned up in Jordan and Turkey, and the Netherlands (probably as scrap metals). Now, maybe Iran too?

uhm. it was all over our news that there were no wmd in iraq to begin with. so they didn't just *poof* disappear, but they never existed. (well...not after 1990 or so at least)

This is equipment that might have given Saddam the capability if we had time to use. If you are looking for WMDs, you go to nuke plants first to find any material produced to weapons grade in the nuke reactors or facilities.

The UN knew about these places and they got moved and dismantled without the US noticing!

They started investigating seven of Iraq's nuclear program sites after the shooting stopped. Not to defend anyone, but you wouldn't invade a Nuclear Facility with gunfire - you would have to wait until the shooting is over.

Also - This was all over the American media. Iraqi Nuclear Power Plants being looted by Iraqi citizens, plutonium is missing, and the idiots dumped sealed uranium onto the floors to use the barrels for storage. Some villagers are using those steel drums to hold "drinking water", while the ones holding plutonium were buried.

Let's hope the plutonium was buried and not shipped to Iran or North Korea!

Why is it worse that Iran or North Korea have plutonium than the USA?

I haven't seen any Iranian troops involved in any wars (except for some minor border conflitcs) in the last 50 years, nor North Koreans for that matter. The US however has bombed the living shit out of half the world in that time.

Actually, I don't want US to have an excuse to start another war since it will drag Australian in again!

They didn't need nuclear weapons as excuse the last two times.

You're right. (or so I think). what makes america think that it is not ok for any other country than the us to posess nuclear weapons?

True, only the "intention of creating a nuclear device" seems to suffice these days with the USA ... :mp5:

Um, we shouldn't have "invaded" the nuclear facility (geez, apparently people think we should invade everything), but we sure as hell should've secured them. At least put them under surveillance CONSTANTLY. Yet another example of how this administration's "war plans" left quite a lot to be desired, if you ask me.

I think Osama and Al Quaeda was the issue there. I'm also sure they were working a "dirty bomb" sometime in the future. I guess the Yanks got bored with trying to catch a ghost and attacked Saddam.

Well...They have this pre-emptive thing, which basically means they attack whoever they like whenever they like.

Despite the fact bush has shown himself to be a retard time and time again, The Ignorant world has overlooked everything he has done. This made me realise how corrupt politics was, and also made me lose interest in it. I'm sure Kerry will go just as corrupt in office... unless he already is...
