Has anyone seen the new commercials for http://www.ready.gov ?

I saw one last night for the first time, and I just about flipped out. It reminded me so much of the duck and cover era. How is it that things have gotten to the stage where advice like this is needed? Why should I be ready with my gas mask and three days worth of water?

How soon they forget.....

Remember the anthrax scare? Just as Red Green has been saying for years - duct tape is all you need!

I guess it depends on where you live. I live and work near Wall Street so I have backup supplies. It isn't so far fetched for me. However if you live in Nebraska - away from a missle silo - you will probably not be affected. should the "shyte" and the fan interface.

I have spent the last several years building an immunity to Iocane powder. :)

I'm not objecting to being prepared. It's the fact that it's gotten to the stage where it's needed. Who messed up bad enough that we now need to own gas masks to deal with the potential fallout? Will that be enough, or will it be duck and cover so that you can kiss your ass goodbye? I tend to be paranoid enough that I think they wouldn't be showing these commercials unless it was already that bad and then some.

It's always a good idea to be prepared for emergencies. I would also recomend a firearm for responsible adults along with a knife. a Leatherman or Gerber multi-tool, and CASH. You can't be ready for everything, but with a little effort you can be ready for a lot. Few people have bomb shelters, but most people have flashlights and fire extinguishers in their homes.

Having said that, it still feels like they're trying to scare me with those ads.

There are days when I think we should have some fallback plans, like using some obsolete technology, just in case the cutting edge stuff fails. A lot of the farms around this area used to have wind generators and windmill operated pumps on the wells. Not that this is practical for everyone, but the idea is sound. Of course, if it really is that bad, maybe it wouldn't make a difference, and your flashlight and your leatherman aren't going to do you a hell of a lot of good when you're dead.

Really, how "unsafe" is anything really? The U.S. has been attacked once, and that was three years ago. Furthermore, how bad really was the anthrax scare anyway? Some people just got powder in their mail? How terrifying! They didn't even send some to the President. Besides, anthrax is just as bad as SARS- potent enough for an annoying sickness but not really deadly.

Well done, that's the way to fight terror, preparedness at home :)

I think this is just another attempt by the Bush administration to scare people into thinking, "Because if you vote Kerry, the terrorists win."

Well, I think it looks like as good an excuse as any to rent Red Dawn again and mull over the draconian gun control laws. ;)

I don't think it's that bad. I think the reason for these commercials is that paranoya plays into the hands of the current US administration...To me it seems that paranoya has become a large and important part of American politics.

Those commercials may add to an already paranoid state. American media only focuses on the negative aspects of civilian life. United States citizens have been paranoid and living in fear for as long as television news has reported current events.

'Paranoia is a state of heightened awareness. Most people are persecuted beyond their wildest nightmares.'
-Robert Rankin

A happy little thought for the day.

Eh, I figure if a nuclear bomb/dirty bomb/whatever goes off, I'm dead, anyway, so, I'm not preparing for anything.

Being prepared is a good thing....but there is a point where being paranoid gets out of hand. Paticularily when it is being used as a political tool.
