Superman Reeves has passsed away.

Mr Basil Fawlty

We've been losing a lot of great legends of the screen these last few month. Reeve was only 52. I remember when he was paralyzed, he kept saying in almost every interview: "I'm going to walk again someday." What a guy! May he rest in peace.

And Republicans didn't much care about stem cell research until Ronald Reagan got Alzheimer's. Sometimes it takes a high-profile case, or a personal experience, to become aware that something's even an issue - let alone get active about it.

It is kind of evil to give false hope to people. Stem cell research has not cured anything yet, and might not in the future. Let's focus on things like cancer, herpes, AIDS, heart disease, diabetes, and the common cold before we throw money at Stem Cell research.

Please Moe Howard and Chess, stop flaiming in the thread I just started.

BTW, stamcell research is indeed the most needed thing at this moment, I have a form of diabetes and use insulin. According to my specialist, the next revolution will come from this research.

I don't see the probblem in using those cells that would be thrown away anyway. Now they will be usefull for something.

Stem cell research has shown promising results (yes, even in human trials) at helping with heart disease.

Cancer cells and stem cells share many, many similarities (other than the fact that one is basically proliferation gone wild). Studying stem cells gives insight into how cancer works, and thus how to prevent and treat it.

Diabetes may be cured by stem cells. In fact, there has been progress made on an "artificial" pancreas that involves stem-cell created islet cells.

The common cold can never be cured completely, as viruses mutate. Nor would we want to cure it, since it helps build our immunity in the first place.

Why don't you actually read up on something before you start making idiotic comments about an area you know nothing about?

Some of the most serious medical conditions, such as cancer and birth defects, are due to abnormal cell division and differentiation. A better understanding of the genetic and molecular controls of these processes may yield information about how such diseases arise and suggest new strategies for therapy. (READ: stemm cell research)

But it's not like the US of A must do the work. I'm pretty confident others would love to do it and reap the benefits.

From that article:

Paul Brown, head of the Center for Tissue Regeneration Science at University College in London, said it's not clear any major scientific ground has been broken, and tests may not be able to show whether the new bone came from stem cells, rather than from the growth factor alone.

The operation put established techniques together, resembling a well-known experiment in which University of Massachusetts scientists grew a human ear using a mold on the back of a mouse in 1995, he said.

Having said that, I am also saddened by the news, and I hope that one day we will have a cure for these ailments.

Um...

"...growth chemical and the patient's own bone marrow, containing stem cells"
"...verify whether the bone was created by the blank-slate stem cells"
"Stem cells are the master cells of the body that go on to become every tissue in the body. They are a hot area of research with scientists trying to find ways to prompt them to make desired tissues, and perhaps organs."
"technique resulted in a scientific advance involving stem cells"
"which contains stem cells"

It's in there. And it certainly helped...I am thinking. It may not have been caused ENTIRELY by the stem cells, but they were present in the process.

I, unlike a bunch of people, was too young to remeber what paralized Superman. I remember hearing about it but that was about it. He did live a good life. After his accident he was paralized and a bunch of people would have just died. but he lived. He fought. What was a miracle is the fact that he fought hard to walk and they were able to shock electricity in is body so he could walk. I suppose after that he was happy with his life. :) and found no more reason to fight. yes he did die from a disease commonly found in paralized people but he fought for 10 years. And that is what counts. Thank you superman for teaching people to keep fighting, even if there is no reason to live.

This reminds me of when Mother Teresa and Princess Diana dies on the same day. Everybody was talking about Princess Di instead of Mother Teresa. I mean what the hell is that all about? From what I remember of the case, the jawbone construct was not fused with a piece of bone, but was simply placed subcutaneously. This means that it was either the stem cells they originally seeded it with, or circulating stem cells from the blood that eventually became bone cells. Now, I don't know all the details of the case - I'm kind of waiting for the paper that will inevitably stem from this, but unless they think skin cells spontaneously turned into bone (which would be completely unheard of), stem cells were involved.
