i think pessimism is mentally FINE and not particularily related to depression.
but it does affect people's quality of life when they always expect the worst

Nothing wrong with being pessimistic, it just means you are pleasantly surprised more often then optimists.

I'm a pessimist and somewhat depressed with the state of the world and mankind in general. Thus, I kinda lack motivation for anything :(

Do you mean chronic pessimists?

I'm a pessimist, but not all of the time. I guess being pessimistic all the time is just plain depression.

I agree. If you always expect the worse, you should NEVER be disappointed. It's those people who manage to be disapointed dispite it all who are not mentally healthy.

While true that you may not be often disappointed by your fellow man, what a dreary way to live one's life. I'd rather believe in people and be disappointed rarely in them than be pleased rarely in life.

Ya the good thing about fatal diseases is, that you don't have to commit suicide. The disease does it for you :p

Thats the good thing about pessimists or chronic depression.. there is just about nothing that can be more depressing or pessimistic than one's own life already is.

Well, if you never get the fatal disease, obviously. I want one too.

But addressing other issues: I think pessimism is almost as bad as optimism. Both are delusions. Choose pragmatism, choose realism, shoot, choose cynicism or idealism. I say you're not in a healthy mental state if your primary motivation is fear (pessimism) OR hope (optimism).

Being pessimistic just prepares you for the worst.
And no, I don't want a fatal disease.

Now, the ability to give other people fatal diseases...
