Car Accidents

I just got in a car accident today. I'm in between 15 and 16 years old and I got my temps (temporary license...) about 4 months ago. I was at a 4 way stop sign, and there were no other cars at the stop sign, but because of the brush I couldn't see if there were cars coming from farther down, but that was ok because they would have to stop anyways. I pulled into the intersection, going straight, and heard my mom scream. I looked to the right, and sure enough a mini-van was blowing the stop sign and coming straight towards me. Stopping or doing nothing would have got me completely broad sided, and hit the passenger side of the car where my mom was sitting, so I accelerated as fast as I could hoping to get past before he hit me. Nope. Slammed right into the right rear wheel, which received most of the damage. There was barely any visible damage save the wheel was bent in at a 15-degree angle and a small dent. The accident spun my car completely around, and the mini-van that hit me crashed into a tree. Nobody was hurt, including the 18-year-old driver of the minivan, and the whole font of his car was smashed to no end. I was really happy I was driving a Volvo, because it was more like a ride for me then scary. I didn't do anything wrong, so I get no points of my license or anything, and his insurance pays for it. I felt good to have such a sturdy car. Overall, I thought it was a fun first accident, but I hope I don’t get in anymore. What other car accidents did people here get in? I doubt they were as fun as mine.

No car accident, but I've been in a bike accident. Apparently the girl didn't know that the walk sign was flashing that little white man (why is it white, anyways?) and she was still driving. Luckily, it was on a local road so I didn't get hurt that badly. Actually, I just hopped off just in time.
That wasn't fun. You're pretty lucky.

Why is it nobody posts unles its about something controversial...? I know, I'm sure people will post if I say it was a NAZI CAR ACCIDENT. And that president Bush is really an alien pickel, and John Kerry was mindwashed by commies.

Perhaps it's because that, although we are happy you survived your first car accident, it's really a topic that doesn't have much oomph. You survived, you were not found to be in the wrong, and there's really not a lot more to say about it.

its a good first accident to have
congratulations on keeping your head and saving your mom a potentially serious injury

having an accident is a good way to learn that accidents happen to anyone at any time. it can make you a better, more careful driver

now you have a better idea of just what kind of person you ARE under pressure

No, that is NOT okay. That is the reason that experienced drivers "inch" out into an intersection like that until we can see who is coming. NEVER rely on people's obeying traffic laws when you do not have to.

So, legally you did nothing wrong, and that is great. Moreover, the other driver is a jerk whose license should be suspended. However, do not let yourself believe that "you did nothing wrong" just because the law says so. People who think like that tend to get into a lot of accidents that are "not their fault," and wonder why it keeps happening. The fact is, they are bad drivers. The law is not a guarantee of good driving -- more like a minimum requirement.

I am not saying this to make you feel bad... I honestly just don't want you to get in any more accidents, your "fault" or not.

Glad you and your mom are unhurt.

#1 - Picking up my little brother at school, hit by drunk driver who sideswiped me from the sidewalk. Car totaled.

#2 - Driving down the road, a semi runs a stop sign and I run right into it. Car was totaled. First rescue worker on the scene: "Who was in that car and how the hell did they walk away?" I have no idea.

Exiting? yes. And I got a nicer car each time - those insurance companies sure are generous.

17 years old, driving around a curve in the road to the right, in a 1970-ish Datsun king cap pickup (yea, that long ago). Rear wheels loose traction and I end up spinning about 270 degrees, instead of the 90 degrees I had planned on. Nobody hurt, and my parents never found out about it... the new dent's just blended in with the ones my dad put there.

My friend drove home tho.....

I was walking with my friend Neil to someones house to watch soemthing. It was what, 9:30 PM and almost pitch black outside. When we neared the cul-de-sac where Neil's neighbor resided, whe heard a car driving very fast - Straight behind us! We both turned around and for a moment stared, then ran to the side of the road. There was a wooden fence and behind it a ditch. We fell to the ground, rolled under the fence and into the ditch. After dusting ourselves up we looked up to see a blue Jeep swerving around the road filled with probably drunk college students. Finally, the got bored and careened away.

I enjoyed the adreniline rush, but it was quite horrifying.

Back in 79 I was driving my vette through the country, I had a few too many to drink. I misjudged a corner, entered a farmer's pasture and drove through it successfully (or so I thought). The next morning I woke up to someone banging on the door. It was the law, they had my plate number from the farmer. Evidentaly I had killed a sheep (it's bloody wool still attached to the mangled fiberglass front, and blood on the cracked windshield). I got charged with leaving the scene of an accident (couldn't prove I was DUI) and I had to pay the farmer $500 as the ewe was a breader, and pay for the fence to be repaired.

One I was in and one I wasn't, in reverse order-

Way back in high school I was gassing up across from school where there was an 80 degree turn intersection that was common in a town that had no intention of growing but did. I watched a Baja Bug come screaming down the street and thought "He's not going to make that turn," and he didn't. The bug rolled onto it's roof after which the police car that was waiting at the intersection lazily drove over to the bug-an arrival that did not give the driver time to stash the bags of drugs that had fallen from the car.

Driving home from Reno in an Izuzu I-Mark, an early one, in the middle of the night my roommate drove into the fastlane over HWY 80 in the winter. As soon as he hit ice the back slid out which he reacted to by lifting his foot from the throttle....so naturaly the car swapped ends. We ran backwards along the mountain side until we fell in a ditch, again backwards. While we where getting pulled out of the hole a Bronco slipped on the same ice and rolled. What pissed me off was my roommate insinuating that we would be dead in my car. At the time I drove a 914-Not only would I not have been in the fast lane (where ice accumulates as the trucks use the right lane), I grew up racing quarter midgets and know better than to lift the throttle in a slide, and the way the Porsche was balanced, when it lost traction it would push (front loses traction, car goes forward) or slide on all four tires, which means it would have caught once off the ice. If we had been in my car we would have been home a lot earlier....
