Regardless of who wins this election, it's definitely going to be a squeaker. There are a number of reasons for this, but I fear it's going to come down to the Electoral College and the Country will remain deeply divided. :headbang:

Isn't it fascinating that all of us are using the :headbang: graphic! Sigh.

The military actually wants Bush according to the USA Today. They want him over Kerry by 4 to 1.

I don't care what your mom or you or grandmother want because you don't decide who gets elected as President, Senator, House Member, Governor, State Legislature, County Board or mayor here in the USA. You are German and can vote in German Elections and I can't. I am American and can vote, when I'm 18, for our leaders. My Family can vote and two of them are registered and will be Voting for GWB for FOUR MORE YEARS!

Personally, I still think that people are treating Bush (43) the way they treated Carter: poorly. He's a man that is going what he thinks is right while dealing with bad situations.

And yet, no wartime president has never lost a re-election and no president that won the electoral but not the popular was re-elected. There is a trend that will be broken. WHich is it?

Actually, FD, I think USA Today was quoting a poll from the Army Times that had about as much chance of being accurate as a Nationstates poll has. Gallup has had some bias issues in recent weeks, oversampling Republicans in their likely voter model and registerd voter model, but they're still basically a reputable outfit. And they do the major polling for USA Today, by the way. Ever hear of the CNN/USA Today/ Gallup poll? You've quoted it before, after all.

I should add that your wartime President model is a little misleading. LBJ likely would have lost if he had run, and he was a wartime President. His VP lost pretty resoundingly to Nixon, so that could be seen as a repudiation of Johnson's policies.

MSNBC also ran a story from the Washington Post just a day or so ago where Marines were speaking out against the war--Marines on station in Iraq, mind you, not back here in the states, and not anonymously either. I think there are a lot of military people who feel like they've been fucked by Bush, and rightfully so, and they're going to tell him to stuff it this time around.

Military soldiers CANNOT express preferences of one candidate over another. That is a violation of the UCMJ and subject to courtmartial. They can do so privately but publicaly and in uniform is another story.

Most polls had Bush leading by a couple percent in 2000. Then election day, Gore wins by half a percent.

Only Zogby and ABC had Gore in the lead right before the election.

Wrong, a soldier can express preference of one candidate over the other, we have many in-office debates, in uniform, during duty hours (my god, what they pay me to do! :) ), a soldier may not participate in partisan political management, campaigns, or conventions (except as a spectator when not in uniform), or make public speeches in the course thereof, attend a rally in uniform, or use contemptuous words against the officeholders described in 10 U.S.C. 888 (10 U.S.C. 888 lists the following officeholders: President, the Vice President, Congress, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of a military department, the Secretary of Transportation, or the Governor or legislature of any State, Territory, Commonwealth, or possession in which the military member is on duty).

First of all I have to say I'm from the UK, so I'm clearly not voting on Nov. 2. I'm still keeping a very very very close eye on the election for obvious reasons and i had a couple of questions for any of you particpants out there.

1) Do you pay more or less in tax than four years ago?
2) Do you care about the massive budget deficit?
3) Do you know if there are more jobs in your area than four years ago?
4) Do you care about the weak dollar?
5) Which is more important to you, the War on Terror, or the economy?

These are questions that you don't always get an answer to in polls. I was just wondering what responses people would give.

BTW, I vote Lib Dem at home so I suppose I would be a Libertarian / Democrat type person.

[quote]1) Do you pay more or less in tax than four years ago?

Less taxes for me and I want it to stay that way.

Yes and no.

3) Do you know if there are more jobs in your area than four years ago?

Depends if the airline that serves this area leaves or not.

4) Do you care about the weak dollar?

not all that worried but it could be better

5) Which is more important to you, the War on Terror, or the economy?

Tough choice. I would say though that the War on Terror is important to me.

If you dont like Bush or Kerry look amoung the third parties. Perhaps your against the federal governments attacks on civil rights, Libertarian. Or maybe your concerned about health care and the enviornment and the Green party is for you. Or even say your sick of all these politicians and theres the Reform party.

Lets say you went into one of these third parties and every election you persuaded 10 people to vote for you. And the next election each of them persuaded 10 people. Well it goes from about 10 to 100 to 1000 to 10,000 to 100,000 to 1,000,000 in 24 years. And that is saying you can persuade 10 people over 4 years!

While it is true these third parties are often fragmented, they can have large influences other ways. Let me point out that if Nader got about 5% in several battleground states he could extort various promises from the Democratic party in exchange for his support. I mean if he really had some showing there he could become the vice presidential nominee.

2) Yes, very much.
3_ Hard to say. There is definitely more than there was two years ago. Four years is a little harder, because of that Internet bubble busting.
4) YES!! I *hate* that the dollar is so weak against the Pound and Euro!
5) That's like having to choose between a Iraq and a hard place. (Yes, I know that's a terrible pun.) One, you suffer in the near term to have a future. The other, you live it up now and may not have a future.
