i've always thought that the "common" refered to the fact that the "common" man or woman should easily be able to show this kind of sense. as in, you don't have to be particularly educated or have any particular experience to exercise this sense. it certainly doesn't refer to how frequently such sense is actually demonstrated in human behavior, since the ABILITY to show good judgment doesn't have anything much to do with the actual exercise of that judgment.
