We might mean the same thing. But "fear of homosexuals' and 'fear of homosexuality' doesn't always mean the same thing. One can fear homosexuality without fearing homosexuals. That person is still a homophobe.

I find that's an interesting point. Therefore, homophobes would be "afraid of the alike". Which means homophobes are repressed homosexuals, hmmm, I'm not far from thinking it...

homophobia, like most English words, does not have the exact same meaning as the root word(s) from which it evolved. homophobia is a term that refers not only to those who fear homosexuals, but also to those who dislike homosexuals and/or homosexuality, and/or who hold homosexuals/homosexuality in contempt. though the dislike of homosexuals is most often tied to fear, the definition of "homophobia" does not require that fear be a part of homophobic feelings, acts, or ideas.

Homophobe is just a term used by guys who hate gay people. To be a phobe you have to fear something to the point where you can't process, and your brain goes in to a frenzy of fear. So in other words to be a true homophobe, you would quell at the sight of two men walking together.

Sure. But what I understood (perhaps wrongly) is that Star Shadow was pointing that "phobos" means fear and "homo" means same - so etymologically, homophobe means "fear of the same", even if it is not, indeed, the meaning of the word...
...And if that's not what the poster meant, that's what I mean...
