As an american, I must say there has been an inordinate amount of posts telling us who we should vote for in our elections by Australians. I think now is the time for australians to thank americans for not expressing their opinions in respect of australia's decision.

You're welcome.

Why should australians think Americans for shutting their mouths and not spurting the nonsense they normally do? Everyone should be able to have an opinion regardless of if they live there or not.

No offense taken from this Australian:).

We get the American election rammed down our throats every night on the news. Every time Bush or Kerry sneeze, we hear about it. Though why the Australian press thinks we are so interested is beyond me. Its not like we Aussies's have any say in who wins, and who does'nt. Its a good thing you Americans are'nt subjected to the same from this side of the Pacific:D.

Got my fingers crossed for a Labor victory.

Alright, that's fair. But I do hear a hell of a lot about the US elections from australians, so I just thought I'd chip in.

I hope labor wins for you.

Surely you did'nt fall for that "interest rates will rise under Labor" stuff.
Even Howard has admitted (a couple of nights ago on the news), that it was just his personal opinion, and there was no evidence to back it up.
It has been stated again and again, interest rates will be the same, no matter which party is in power, and that came from one of the former governers of the reserve bank, with no party bias.
The reserve bank decides interest rates, not the government.

The reserve bank sets the interest rates taking into account the current economic situation of the country. Which is controlled by how the government spends money
The Liberal government has attained the lowest interest rates in around 40 years (6-7%)
When the Labor government was in power, there were at one stage 17% interest rates
When Latham was mayor of Liverpool... you've seen the adds...

Well, obviously it does to us Australians :).

If Labor wins, our troops will be home from Iraq by Christmas, our heath care system will be brought back up to what it used to be before Howard got his mitts on it, the educations system will be fairer etc, etc.

9 years under the Liberals (and its high time they changed that name), is more than enough punishment.

Yeah, that's labour strong points, what bout the liberal record of low unemployment, low interest rates, a strong economy, etc...

With the liberals you get more money to fund your own stuff, labour provides more services but you get less money

Be fair, that high interest rate was in the middle of a world wide recession, that affected a lot of developed countries, not just Australia, and Paul Keating is not Mark Lathem. That would be the same as me blaming John Howard for problems during Malcom Fraser's time in office.

I saw the adds about Lathem's time as Liverpool mayor too. I also saw adds that pointed out all the big, big woppers Howard has told in the last 9 years. Advertising has never affected by voting choices, because its all spin (from both sides), and very rarely takes the full story into consideration, especially when just the "juicy bits" make the other side look worse.

Looks like we will have to agree to disagree on this, and just keep our fingers crossed that the best party wins, though in my case, thats Labor :D.

I know that it matters. i was just being facetious. Really, I hope your party wins . There is just so much anti-americanism these days sometimes I get a little defensive.

(For example I'm first generation and my mother is english, and my father is german - go figure?. one of them now hates america because they couldn't get over home country ties)

I don't think so. It's different from what you're proposing.

If John Howard or Mark Lathem get into power, then what they do will only really effect Australia. If George Bush or John Kerry get into power, then what they do will effect the rest of the world, even though you guys don't really know what "the rest of the world" means. So we should be able to tell you who to vote for. You should be able to tell us who to vote for too, but you should also realise that who wins the American election is far more important than who wins any other election.

On a lighter note, John Howard should NOT win the election because of a few reasons.

1) He lies.

2) He didn't go on Rove, when he clearly should have.

3) He lies.

4) He lied about the refugees chucking their babies over their ships. Then again, you were stupid enough to believe him.....

5) He doesn't tell the truth.

6) He's old.

7) We can predict that AFTER, NOT BEFORE, he wins the election (assuming he does), he will go on Rove, because Rove can then make him look as much of a liar, a jackass and a hypocrite as he wants, it won't matter anymore.

You should probably take note that Labor took the initiative and floated the dollar in the 80's which saved us from any ill effects from the 1997 Asian Economic Crisis...which occured under a liberal government...We would have had some crippling inflation if it weren't for Labor.
