UN Corruption - Does the world even care?

I don't get this. There is mounting evidence of widespread corruption in the UN Oil for Food program. It appears that high level officials of France & Germany (among others) were taking bribes from Saddam - Yet, I see absolutely no uproar or even comment about it. No demands that it be prosecuted, or even investigated.

If this happened in the USA, it would be front page news with huge pressure for those involoved to be prosecuted. Do people in Europe not care about this kind of corruption, or it is there and just not making the news?

And I notice that most people either don't know of or are indifferent to the many massacres the UN has either participated in or otherwise caused (directly or indirectly). The UN is one of the greatest threats to world peace the planet has ever seen.

If this happened in the US no one would care or it would somehow be justified just like the torture of prisoners where. Not a single American seemed to give a damn that they were just as bad as Saddam.
Please notice that it is individuals who have taken bribes and not UN as a whole. The UN employs observers and consultants on a need basis and doesn't really maintain a large staff as such.
Naturally this must be dealt with and the guilty must face the consequences of their actions.

No mention of Germany. Please keep it limited to the actual facts of the report.

You can't blame Rawanda on the UN only. The US was more then capable of dealing with it and yet the US representative was instructed to not use the word Genocide in any discussions as it would force action.

I liked Clinton, but I blame him for Rawanda. He was a poll driven President and was gunshy because of Somalia.

My mistake. I heard this on a news report and had forgotten the other countries.
It was China and Russia. Not Germany.
Tho' in fairness, up to 40 countries were involved, so anyone could be fair game...

The UN is corrupt - it needs new leadership, leadership which will take *true* action in places like Sudan

You mean, true leadership, which in typical US fashion, decides unilaterally what to do and who to attack and oppress? Oh sure. We need yet another thing doing this, as if the US doing it is not bad enough. While Sudan is genocide and the UN is working on it, it does not work that quickly, thank god, or it would be easily abused.

What it needs is to be disbanded and utterly destroyed, so that we can truly strive for world peace.

What the heck is wrong with you? Are you mad because McDonalds opened up down the street from you. Look around - fast food, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, NFL Europe. It may not be militarily, but the US has already taken over the world. :D

McDonalds did not open up near me. I hate McDonalds. *puke*
Coca-Cola is ok, I drink that sometimes. But I prefer mineral water :)

NFL Europe.. don't think it will ever become important. Soccer > than any "American sports" here.

imo, any organization that tries to put laws on countries will eventually collapse.

"international laws" don't really make sense...

I don't know man. I love baseball. Nothing better in the world that sitting back at the old ballpark with a cold beer and a warm hot dog, keeping score and enjoying the sights and the sounds. I love it :D

As far as the UN goes, I personally think it it obsolete. Any time you have an organization ran by humans it's going to be corrupt. Unfortunately, in the UN's case, that corruption affects the entire world, not just a single company or country. Just my opinion. :)

That may be true, but Japan is slowly taking over this country in the same way. Soon it will be Japan the rules all. That is if I don’t conquer the world first.
