Best College Football Conference

Well...first I just wanted to point out that this week the SEC has 6 teams in the top 25. More than any other conference...

The Big Ten is right behind the SEC with 5 teams. ACC has 4 teams. Big 12 and Pac-10 have 3 each. The remaining four spots are given to Big East, Conference USA, Mountain West, and Western Athletic, each with one each. Just going off that statistic, the SEC is the best college football conference...however #24 LSU is scheduled to play #12 Florida in Florida and I suspect LSU will lose, bumping them out of the SEC, but it's hard to say who will move up into the top 25 and it's also hard to say what teams, if any, will fall out.

Here is another statistic that says quite a bit more about the SEC...
Birmingham, AL - The Southeastern Conference had 260 of its former players on opening day playing rosters in the National Football League, which leads all college football conferences.

The Big Ten was second with 215 followed by the ACC with 212, the Pac-10 with 196, Big 12 with 80 and the Big East with 78 former players on NFL rosters.

Tennessee led all SEC schools with 38 former players in the NFL followed by Florida and Georgia with 36 each, LSU with 31, Auburn with 22 and Alabama with 20. Ole Miss and South Carolina each had 17 former players on NFL rosters, Mississippi State had 16, Arkansas 13, Vanderbilt 10 and Kentucky had four.

You know, normally when I say the SEC is the best football conference, I get lots of people disagreeing. Now I prove it...and no one says anything.

The SEC isn't the best college football conference because other conferences used to be better?

...slavery is a good thing because aside from the past 150ish years, all of history agrees with slavery.

By the way, when counting players in the NFL according to what conference they hail from, that's not exactly a snapshot. Peyton Manning isn't exactly a recent graduate from Tennessee...

Being ahead one year is in no way the best.
The Michigan football team has won an NCAA-record 833 games through the 2003 season.
833 games the best.
Consistancy, SEC is a joke.
ON top once means nothing.
Big Ten teams are always on top of the heap, like I said you have one good year and you call them the best.
Whooohoooo.
Wow, SEC is on a roll.

The SEC consistantly puts out quality teams. That's why the SEC is one of the conferences included in the BCS. By the way, I'm most definitely not talking about individual teams. I'm talking about whole conferences. Your Michigan record means nothing when comparing conferences except that Michigan plays in a conference that is easier to win games in.

"Big Ten football standouts continued to collect preseason accolades as 12 student-athletes were named to the watch lists for the Outland Trophy, Bronko Nagurski Trophy and Davey O'Brien Award. The Outland Trophy annually recognizes the top interior lineman in college football, the Nagurski Trophy is awarded to the best defensive player in the nation while the O'Brien Award honors the preeminent quarterback in the country.

The Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) announced both the Outland and Nagurski watch lists last week, as Wisconsin defensive tackle Anttaj Hawthorne was one of only six players to be named to both lists. The 2003 First Team All-Big Ten selection joined SMU's Allan Adami, Kansas State's Jermaine Berry, USC's Shaun Cody, Miami's Orien Harris and Wyoming's Zach Morris as nominees for both prestigious honors. Hawthorne was one of three Badgers on the Outland watch list along with guard Dan Buenning and center Donovan Raiola, as Wisconsin was one of only four schools with three honorees along with Florida State, Miami (FL) and Oklahoma. Other Big Ten players on the list included Michigan guard David Baas and Minnesota center Greg Eslinger. Tackles, centers and guards that play on offense or defense are eligible for the award, which is chosen by the FWAA All-America Committee. Iowa's Robert Gallery, the No. 2 pick in the most recent NFL draft, claimed the Outland Trophy last year, making him the ninth Big Ten standout to collect the honor. "

The SEC sent seven of its teams to postseason bowl games in 2003-2004, winning an NCAA-best five. For the 23rd straight season, the SEC has recorded the largest total attendance figure of any conference in the nation, with over six million fans attending games in the conference in 2003. Five SEC teams were ranked in the final Top 25 of the Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN polls. LSU won its second SEC title in three years and won their first national championship since 1958. Last year Arkansas' Shawn Andrews was awarded the Jacobs Blocking Trophy.

It's a good thing we're limiting this to football so it's actually a challenge. Heh, Arkansas is by far the best Track and Feild team--and I'm not even going to talk about the SEC as a whole.

I'm not saying the SEC is a clear cut dominating conference over the Big Ten, but they do indeed have more top 25 teams than any other conference at this point in time, which means...at this point in time...they've got more quality football programs than any other program. Actually...here is a better way to look at it...which benefits the Big Ten. The Big Ten has 5 of 10 schools in the top 25. 0.500. The SEC has 6 of 12 schools in the top 25. 0.500. It's pretty even. But in the SEC, much moreso than the Big Ten, there are very, very few games that you mark down as a W before the season even starts.

"Consistently, Arkansas students have won prestigious national and international scholarships and fellowships. Federally and corporately funded research has grown dramatically, with Arkansas' faculty winning major research grants from the nation's most competitive programs."

No they dont have more quality programs.

They got a good enrollment.
They got good player recruited to their colleges which may inturn lead to a good program later.
NFL means nothing in the overall quality of a college program.
I take ten mediocre players and unite thme to smash a couple of superstars I have the superior program.
Will the NFL draft any of my individuals?
Doubtful.
Equating NFL interest in PLAYERS to mean that the program is better, is just wrong.
Ask any NFL player if the BigTen is or ever has been a weak conference-the answer is no-never.
Ask the same question about the SEC- yes it has been.
It isnt now, but when I say BEST- I mean Best.
My question for you is, were you fan of the SEC when they didnt have a slew of players in the NFL.

I've always been an SEC fan and I never said the Big Ten was a weak conference. The Big Ten has and always will have top notch programs. The SEC will always have a pretty good balance. On any given Saturday, any given SEC team can beat any other SEC team (unless we're talking about Vandy).

HiDEC has executed contracts from government and industry totaling more than $30 million. PAce Maker wow.
The University of Michigan Health System includes three hospitals: C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, University Hospital, and Women's Hospital, as well as nearly 150 clinics and MCare, an HMO. The university opened the first university-owned hospital in the United States in 1869. The EKG, gastroscope, and Jonas Salk's polio vaccine were invented at the university.

1) I'm only naming Arkansas people and such. I'm not going through all the stuff for all the SEC schools.

2) That list is 3 years old. The Sam W. Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas is currently ranked 28th.

The university in 2003 has 51,000 students and 5,600 faculty in three campuses. The University of Michigan system includes the main Ann Arbor campus as well as two others, the University of Michigan, Dearborn and the University of Michigan, Flint. The university has the largest pre-medicine and pre-law university in the country and the largest yearly research expenditure of any university in the United States. It is one of two colleges to have both engineering and medical schools ranked in the U.S.'s top ten. In the 1990s the University of Michigan claimed to have the largest assemblage of Apple Macintosh computers outside of the main factory.

Ok, one more Michigan

New York City real estate developer Stephen M. Ross, BBA ’62, has provided a gift of $100 million to the University of Michigan Business School. It is the largest donation ever to a U.S. business school and the largest gift to the University in its 187-year history. In recognition of the power of the gift to elevate the school’s aspirations and realize its ambitious vision, the Board of Regents met in special session on September 9, 2004, to rename the school the Stephen M. Ross School of Business.
Ross, who earned his degree in accounting from the Michigan Business School, is founder, chairman and chief executive officer of The Related Companies, L.P., developer of the $1.7 billion, 2.8 million-square-foot Time Warner Center on Columbus Circle in New York City. The company’s real estate portfolio, valued in excess of $8 billion, makes it one of the most prominent real estate developers in the country. The Related Companies is also the largest shareholder in CharterMac, the country’s largest financier of affordable housing in the United States, with approximately 250,000 units in 44 states.
Ahh Alumni, are great. Especially when their education makes them successful.

$100 million?

"In October 2001, the University publicly launched the largest comprehensive fund-raising effort in its history: the Campaign for the Twenty-First Century. At that time, the University's goal was to raise $500 million from alumni, friends, foundations, corporations and other organizations by June 30, 2004.

All of that changed with the $300 million gift commitment from the Walton Family Charitable Support Foundation in April 2002. Suddenly, Campaign totals exceeded $600 million in gifts and pledges - $100 million over the goal with 27 months remaining. Campaign leaders elected to raise the Campaign goal to $900 million and extend the life of the Campaign to June 30, 2005. There are more than 200 volunteers engaged in the effort."

$300 million.

Oh, by the way, the $100 million is a record for money contributed directly to a business school...but do you know what was the record before that? The $50 million given from the Walton charity to the University of Arkansas' business school, which was consequently renamed the Sam W. Walton College of Business.

Opal, Ross personally donated 100million, himself, alone, no drive to raise money, nothing.
He volunteered it.
His own money.
Not a trust, just him.
One guy and his wallet and UM degree.
Good luck with the telethon though. ;)

The $300 million is all from the Sam W. Walton foundation. Walton can't exactly do it himself since he's kind of dead. The goal is to raise $900 million. The U of A has to raise $300 million to get the $300 million from the Waltons, and their goal is to raise another $300 million on top of that. They're past the $300 million mark.

Private gift support has grown from $20.4 million in 1997 to $363 million in 2003, a 1,679 percent increase. These annual totals include gifts actually received and exclude pledges.

That's a pretty damned good improvement.

I can't wait til the Hogs come up there and whip up on your guys.

Arkansas has played on National TV 3 times so far...and they'll play on national TV against Auburn, and against LSU...that's 5 of 11...and I'm sure that Georgia@Arkansas and maybe Arkansas@SouthCarolina might be on TV as well. Why? People love watching SEC football.

Sorry...I had to point out that the Big Ten has eleven teams.

Isn't it weird how the SEC only has 12 teams but they only have 10 unique mascots between the 12 teams. Mississippi State and Georgia are both Bulldogs. Auburn and LSU are both Tigers.

Let's see if I can get the rest of the SEC mascot...

Arkansas Razorbacks
Alabama Crimson Tide
Auburn Tigers
LSU Tigers
Ole Miss Rebels
Miss State Bulldogs
Tennessee Volunteers
Georgia Bulldogs
Florida Gators
South Carolina Gamecocks
Kentucky Wildcats --is that right?
Vanderbilt...always loses?
