I'm sort of curious, is there anything in the western 2/3rds of Australia or is it pretty much uninhabited except for Aboriginies?

I used to live in Perth about 8 years ago. It was pretty cool, an average size city...over a million citizens. Great weather if you like dry heat (I do), but not too excessive.

Fremantle has a navy base with US warships visiting regularly. I went on several aircraft carriers when i lived there...USS Ranger was one of them, forget the rest. (You can pay to go on board as a tourist and the sailors sell you photos and stuff...and in return for this small service, they shag most of the young women in the town)

Actually, theres a few other places of interest.

Geraldton- Uh, country town. They have fishing, and umm, a beach with dolphins that you can feed.

Kalgoorlie- Hookers, aboriginals, and gold mining

Esperance- Windfarms, and umm, thats all I remember.

Broome- Umm, pearls, and umm, i've never actually been there....

Pinnacles desert- Full of phallic limestone formations

Also, theres the Nullabor plain, which is, umm, flat.

Theres a lot of wheat farms, and up the top there is rainforest and stuff. I think. Never been up there.

Everything else is desert pretty much.

EDIT- Thats the western 1/3, and I cbf going into detail about the state of South Australia, even though I was born there :p

Seceded you mean? Yeah. I think theres an independent "state", a cattle station really... somewhere around there.

Perth has the most millioners per capita of any city in the world, and from memory is also the city furtherest away from any other city in the world.

Desolate, very much so.

A terrorist cell detonated a nuclear bomb there and it took nearly a decade before ANYONE knew about it.

WTF?

Are you sure you arent referring to Aum Shinrikyu gassing some sheep with Sarin? (I think that was in SA anyway)

I heard about that too, supposidly a Japanese (?) militant group detonated a nuclear weapon in the middle of the outback in an area so far away from civilisation that nobody noticed. I think it was mentioned in Bill Bryson's 'down under' book.

Mentions a meteor impact in 1993.

Mentions a possible blast off the coastline (Indian Ocean) in 1979.

(And it might have been South Africa's test)

Can't find anything else of substance in my (limited) search.

Well, I've been living W.A. for the last 18 years and livin in Perf (:D) for the last 5. And theres never been a nuclear bomb go off that I heard about, And even if that did happen stuph like "fallout" and really big mushroom clouds would kinda give it away. :p

I think that was the point of the story. Australia is so large and with so much space with no one in it, that somebody could set off a nuke in the outback without anyone noticing.

Mad Max: Beyond the Thunderdome was filmed around Coober Pedy which is in South Australia. Last time I was there (1990) there were still the discarded vehicles from the film lying about. Not sure if they are still there..
