Rest in peace Lieutenant Chris Saunders...

Sometime yesterday, a Canadian navy submarine, the HMCS Chicoutimi, the final of the four Victoria class subs we bought for about $750 million, suffered an electrical fire about 200 km off the Irish coast. Nine of the 57 crew suffered from smoke inhalation, six went back to work soon after, but the others had to be airlifted out once a contingent of British ships arrived. He died only a few hours ago in hospital. While I know this might seem like nothing to some of you Americans who have lost over a thousand service in Iraq alone, keep in mind that our soldiers rarely see combat, and that with such a small military, deaths are few and far between. I just felt I should make a post giving tribute to him, especially since his death shouldn't have happened in the first place, as we should never have had to resort to buying the subs in the first place.

That's too bad. Sad to hear.

Don't blame the sub though. If Canada didn't buy the subs, he probably would've been run over by a jeep. Sometimes it's just your time.

I didn't apologize to the Americans, I simply said that because I didn't want any Americans coming in and bitching about Canadians making a big deal over one guy when they've lost over a thousand in Iraq.

My condolences to his family.
But, let's not use him to make some political points, please? We can discuss the merits of buying 4 second-hand submarines without bringing him in the equation.

My deepest condolences to his family. I trust Canada's military are volunteers? If so, at least he died doing something he chose to do. Not many can say that.

WTF, nice try Moe. BTW you're no match for Jever Pilsener, kiddo.

Hey they should blaim the Brits, specially now that we now that this sub had a big corrosion problem and was canibalised to make the other 3 of that class work a bit. This Sub, the ex Uk "Upholder" had a lot of probs before. BTW why did Canada agree with paying 10's of millions extra for Sub (new spareparts aso) while it was the UK that canibalised it?

Better bought German, US or one of the French subs (the nuclear Triomphant class is great, it can nuke half of the world with it's load).

They should have saved their money for a couple of German 212-A class U-boats.

Even in the British military, BAE Systems is viewed with the sort of contempt afforded to a used car dealer. Frankly, not surprised. The company nearly folded a year ago. Shame it didn't.
