This is my actual first post... me thinking up a concept for my nation... Uhm, and I'm probably gonna lurk for a while, because I need to get the feel of things before I try to RP anything. :) And hopefully I'm not like those n00bs y'all are making fun of!

World Encyclopedia Entry: Jaihara

Population: 20 Million
Capital: Jaihara City
Currency: Nahai
Geography: Subtropical climate, with predominant grasslands; one main river, 85 miles of coastline.

Jaihara is led by an absolute ruler-a hereditary queen. However, the government is not the true power in the nation.

Jaihara's overwhelming religious majority practices a religion known as Janni; and the real power lies with the priests, who are chosen through secret methods from among the children on their eighth birthdays. Practitioners of Janni worship nature as a deity, and the large network of priests and other religious authorities handles most of the everyday issues of the nation.

Sometime in the past--Jaihara is an old, though small, nation--the priests learned how to harness psychic forces in order to actually control nature. These powers include influencing weather and plant growth patterns, and, for the most powerful, understanding the minds of various animals. The priests' visible power ensures that the country is reasonably prosperous, and that over 95% of the population are firm believers in the Janni fiath.

The priests' government is generally benevolent, since one of the tenets of the nation's religion is that unnecessary waste of life (including animal, plant, and human life) is unwise. A militia, but not a standing army, is used solely for defense.

A small minority of atheists and believers in other religions exists. These people are generally misunderstood and sometimes suffer the results of ignorance and prejudice, perpetrated both by the priests and by their fellow citizens. This group is small enough, however, not to have much of an impact on the country's status quo.

However, there is a small but growing splinter group among the priests. These "radicals" believe that loss of life is a necessary part of nature; that it is the competition between organisms which assures that the survivors are the strongest. These priests believe in encouraging such competition by effectively legalizing most crimes against a fellow human, up to and including murder. Whether this sort of anarchy will persist and perhaps result in a new social order--or even a civil war --is unknown.
