Weird Name?

I got an email from my cousin in the Navy, and not even the U.S. Navy can get our last name right. Sure, they weren't far off, but what is so hard about "Bridger?" Bridge with an R. Not Bridgers. Not Bridges. Not Britches. Not Bride gers. Not Bridd gers. Not Brigg der. IT IS NOT BRIGG DER!!

My cousin's friend's last name, which I cannot spell, is pronounced Juh - Nah - Poe - Liss; Juhnahpoelis. Maybe it's spelled that way, who knows? But that's waaay harder then Bridger. Of course, they mess her name up all the time. Johnapopoliss?

Anyhow, I was bored, and decided to fire this up and see if I get ignored like some of those sad people out there who aren't exciting enough, or if people will actually share their strange last names.

How about it? Is your last name misspronounced all the time? Not uncommon. What is it, and how?

Only Italians seem able to pronounce my last name.

I know someone who's name is misprounced as "Iammaleandilovetosuck****"
Everytime someone refers to him as that he really gets pissed off. (I actually don't know anyone like hat but I thought it would be funny)

You are highly amusing, I guess this shows the quality personel of the US Navy. I have the same problem with my first name, ie not y people, gah. My last name is so ecentric that we have to spell it out all the time, but people usually get it right.

No joke. That's what I said to my sister... about the U.S. Navy. I just don't get it. We all have our black sheep, but how did they get the last name of an enlist wrong? They call most people by their last name, anyway, so it just doesn't seem feasible. Whatever... most people who do pronounce it wrong are telemarketers, and they don't matter.

To them, "I eat babies!" really quietly, my mom is dead and my dad is always out of town. Little do they know my mom is really divorced! AHAHAHA!

There's a guy on another MB I post on whose last name (he plays HS football and his team has a Web site with pics of players) is something like Bizozero. Ay-ay-ay! He finds it amusing how people butcher it.

*Chuckles.* If my name wasn't so damned easy to pronounce, I'd probably find it amusing, too. I do find their embarassment amusing, when they do give a shoot.

I got the same problem as Kuriohara my last name is Wilder. Simple up enough to pronounce right? Wrong people have pronounced it Wheel-der Wider and a whole bunch of stupid ways! It's pronounced like the word as in "I am WILDER than her."

Yea, well my last name is Gordon! And I don't think anyone has ever spelled it wrong, or mispronounced it. My first name, however, Jeremy, has been spelled Jermey by almost everyone since 2nd grade. I don't even bother to correct it anymore, no one cares if it is supposed to be "jeremy".

Thus, it is often pronounced Germie, btw.

It just doesn't make sense. Do they just brain fart all of a sudden? Forget how to speak? Maybe because it's a last name it shouldn't be associated with a commonly used word, so they try to pronounce it as something else.

But come on... Bridger. Wilder. But what was your family profession? :P

My last name is Campeau, and it's been spelled in ways I never thought possible such as,

Camper
Compea
Compeao lol

and my favorite, "Copper"

What makes this worse is that I am a girl with a boy's first name, which my name happens to be Bobbie. My own first name even gets misspelled as well, such as Bobbi, or Bobbie. Yeah, what the hell were my parents thinking?

My first name is fairly simple, James. So is my dad's. So, I guess, technically Mr. Brigg der is home. But they don't know! I'm just a friend of the family who always answers the phone.

But I'll have to be honest, I'm not 100% certain on how to pronounce your name.

*Chuckles.* Stephanian is a much cooler name. I agree... damned whities.

I speak hardly any German, but that wouldn't happen to be "Meister", would it?

My last name is always mispronounced as well. It's Wojcik. You wouldn't think it would be that hard. The c is silent but otherwise it sounds just like its spelled. Yet it seems to me that nobody can every say it right let alone spell it. My best friend - who i've known since I was a year old - still misspells it. It's so frustrating.

My name is always mispronounced. If they don't mispronounce my first name, they mispronounce my last name. Which I don't even think should be possible. My last name only has four letters and there is only one obvious way to pronounce it. When people say my name they always manage to put the "emphasis on the wrong syllable.

My last name is mispronounced so much that I wasn't sure how to pronounce it myself until 3rd grade.

Let's see...

I once knew someone whose last name was "Wiechoske", pronounced wiss-KOSS-kee. There are Chiemleski (shemuLESSkey) , Brdecka (burDETCHka), Trchalek (churCHAleck), & Burianek (byurieANECK) families in our area. My MIL's last name is Leskovjan, and before she changed it back to her maiden name after her divorce, my sister's last name was Koohrangpour. I have a friend whose daughter's half-sister's given name is Insy Kahkah (first & middle names), which sounds to me like "little shit".

I'm friends with a girl whos last name is Madraseehee (or something very close to that...not compeltely sure about the spelling). Apparently in Iranian (or Persian, I don't know if there's a difference or what), it means "Teacher."

My last name is Rutkowski...people never seem to be able to spell it, and it gets pronounced as "Rutowski" or "Rukowski" a lot.

I know your pain. I'm an Alan. I've had it spelled and said many stupid or at least wrong ways:
Alen
Allan
Allen
Alun
Alin

It's Alan dammit! I can understand the first few mispellings, but those last ones. WTF???

Heh....my last name is Griffith, and for some reason and I never understood why until recently, everyone wanted to change it to Griffin (spelling and pronunciation). Recently, someone informed me that typically, white people have the last name "Griffin" where black people have the last name "Griffith" which I suppose may be why people want to change the "th" to an "n," since I'm white...but who knows...

No, but people screw up my first name all the time. And it is not at all difficult.

Elric.

But no... I get Eric, and Elroy, even Elwood! What is hard about this?!
