Throwing a football between one's legs is completely natural and should not be discriminated against. ;)

Agreed. But there's something odd about his stance. Knees aren't bent or something. Just looks kinda wrong..

His hand. He should have his palm facing the viewer. Try it yourself, imagine you are holding a football with your right hand, and put it between your legs. Note that your palm almost certainly faces your left leg. Kerry's faces his right. The picture was pretty obviously photoshopped anyways.

No. I can do that, and I'm certainly no gymnast. It is just a matter of twisting your hand. I don't know why he would have, but it is possible. I don't see what you mean about it being photoshopped.

You can twist your hand, but as you pointed out, he had no reason to. To take the example of the football again, holding it with your hand turned around to throw would be both more difficult, and completely pointless. Your arm would extend much more easily if your hand isn't turned.

Now, I don't play football, so perhaps one is meant to have their hand turned in such a fashion, but it strikes me as utterly backwards.

His arm is also too long. Given the extra length it would take just to connect his arm to his shoulder (at least the width of his leg which obscures it), his arm would be approximately the length of his leg.

The football is also too low, as it has moved several feet away from his hand and by the tilt it should be moving upwards, while it is in fact below his hand.

Last but not least, the football casts no shadow, nor does Kerry's arm. His legs do however.

It doesn't take a genius to realize Kerry bent over for some reason (maybe to tie his shoes) and someone thought it would be amusing to mess with the picture.

I like Kerry and all, but I think the photo's legit. The football looks too low because his hand came up after throwing (which usually happens) and he probably can't throw a spiral so the ball is wobbly.

His arm isn't too long, cause anyone can see his right shoulder is dipped farther in than his left.

The shadows from his legs and the people in the backgroud are barely there. It's overcast so anything more than a few inches off the ground wouldn't cast a strong enough shadow to see. That and/or there's a large shadow behind him from his body which probably covers the shadows from his arm and the football. It would be at the correct angle for both.

I'm not comparing his left arm to his right. I'm making a simple measurement from the end of his wrist to where his shoulder has to be. For myself, from just above my ankle to where my leg meets my thigh is 2 feet. From just where my wrist ends to where my arm meets my shoulder in 18-19 inches. That means my arm is 5-6 inches shorter than my leg.

And while he may very well have let go of the ball earlier, that would still cause it to go up, as he let go while his arm was swinging upwards; it wouldn't have time to be dragged down within 3 feet of being thrown.

The shadows you may have a point on, though it still looks suspicious.

Well, it adds credibility I suppose. :\ It isn't like newspapers haven't run fake stories as real before, but Yahoo! is usually pretty good. [shrugs] Maybe I'm just making a mountain out of a molehill, who knows?

His arm isn't too long. His torso is turned and accounts for what might look like extra length. Additionally, I think the reason his hand is turned and the ball is lower than his hand is the same: he's throwing it at an angle away from the camera, not straight back. With the angle, there's plenty of room for the ball to have fallen, especially with such an awkward throw (he couldn't have put much into it from that angle). The picture flattens out the image, and makes it seem like the ball is somewhere it isn't.

At any rate, it's still a silly thing for a grown man in dress clothes to do.

Interestingly enough, it does seem to be an illusion of perspective. I decided to try taking the image into an image editor, and draw two lines (one for his arm, one for his leg) to compare. Sure enough, his arm is actually proportionately shorter to his leg. Odd to look at... but I suppose appearances can be deceiving.

Hard to believe such a strange photo is real. o_o;

It's weird because he did a one-handed hike. Luckily, they were not in actual formation.

But this reminds me of an idea where we should make the presidential candidates do an American Gladiators style thing....especially the gauntlet. Who wouldn't want to see Bush and Kerry running from checkpoint, trying to hit a far away target, while having tennis balls shot at them? It would definitely show who actually served in the military as who ever actually did would likely apply anything they remember to it.
