Ok, I went to save my paper on why the bill of rights to be abolished, and my computer gave me this message.

My computer now has a grasp of irony. This can't be good.

So poorly worded it looks like a virus of some sort.
Update whatever virus scanner you have and run it.

Knowing my luck, it probably is a virus. Thanks for the heads up Myrth.

I'm assuming it means the file is already in use by another program. Or if you run Windows XP, for some reason you don't have the privileges to save the file where you are trying to save it.

You should listen to your computer then. It happens to be right ... none of us has the authority to repeal the Bill of Rights. :)

I think that is a virus...considering that the box style is Windows XP, but the progam is called Microsoft Word instead of WordPerfect these days..

WordPerfect is a perfectly valid competitor to Word, and quite good too.

It could be a virus. However, check to make sure that you do have permission to save the file there. Make sure that the directory is not read-only and that you have write permission there (this holds if you are using NTFS, if you don't know what that means, don't worry about it for now).

Everything's working fine now; I think I just locked up the file somehow. No banning of my typing rights anymore. I'm running a virus check just to be sure though. Thanks everyone.

Windows XP does NOT come with microsoft word, it comes with a program called Word Perfect. and that more than likely is a virus, i know what the error message is for trying to do something when the file is in use, that doesnt look like it

Hmm, it seems I may have been wrong. I decided to try deleting a file in use with Word Perfect 11:

Though, that's deleting, not saving; but either way, you can see they are quite a bit different in appearance.

Really? It comes with Corel WordPerfect, rather than Microsoft Word? That's kind of odd.

Mine came with both. Word is stored under Start > All Programs > Accessories > Wordpad. Unless you mean something different by Microsoft Word...

No. I don't... but I think pies are a good idea.

Then why would you advocate the abolition of the bill of rights?

Then why would you advocate the abolition of the bill of rights?I never said I did. I needed a topic for a paper, and it had to have an arguement. I couldn't think of anything, so I decided to play devil's advocate and have some fun. If anything my outlandish battering of it proves that it should be in place.

Yeah, we mean Microsoft Word. That's it, not Wordpad.

My computer came with Word and Wordpad. No WordPerfect. I had to install that myself later.

Listen, tell me, do you have WP10 Service Pack 4 installed? Because this is a very common problem with SP4. Although generally it occurs when you try to save to a Network Folder. Uninstall, download SP 3 and then Hot Patch 4. Or, try to disable write caching. In fact, I'd suggest you try that first.

Lordy.

XP comes with WordPad and Notepad by default. A lot of OEM resellers bundle the extremely cheap Corel Suite with their computers. Others will include some variation of Microsoft Office (featuring Word), but those usually cost more.

Don't confuse Dell / Gateway / Sears with Microsoft. MS didn't sell you your computer, they sold their OS to some reseller, who sold it to you.

Well yes, that much was kind of obvious. Usually however, at least in my experience, you are told what software (if any) comes bundled with the computer. I certainly didn't ask for WordPerfect, and I'm fairly sure it was never mentioned, but I suppose they just chose to throw it in anyways.

Except that even a computer is no more intelligent than a calculator; it is only as intelligent as the person operating it. If you can't figure out how to turn your computer on, you'll find its intelligence to be severely lacking. If you can't figure out how to run a program, its intelligence won't floor you.

Until a computer is capable of thinking without human input, it is only as intelligent as the person using it.
