Eating less is not so simple. I would suggest eating BETTER. You can eat all you want of vegetables and fruit and as long as you are exercising you will lose weight.

Buy products with reduced fat or no fat. You can eat just as much but will be getting less calories.

But in principle, i agree. Weight loss/gain is a simple function of calories in/calories out.

In helping you choose which foods to eat, keep in mind the order and ease with which your body metabolizes them. This is the order in which your body will metabolize (burn) different types of foods:

1. alcohol - the easiest to burn. as long as there is alcohol to burn, the body will burn nothing else.

2. simple sugars - fructose, glucose, etc. mostly found in fruits.

3. complex carbohydrates - once your body no longer has alcohol or simple sugars to burn, it will begin to burn more complex carbohydrates, like those found in bread and pasta.

4. fats - only when there are none of the above three foods available for burning will your body burn fat.

5. protein - the body does not like to use protein for fuel. It is the equivalent of burning your house's wooden walls for heat. This is why high protein diets can work for some people; it forces the body to burn its fat for fuel.

So if you want to lose weight, you need to limit your calories from alcohol, sugars and carbohydrates to an amount LESS than what you burn in an average day, so that the body must use its fat for fuel.

Another point to consider: the metabolism stays at a higher rate of you eat a little something every four hours. If you only eat three times a day at intervals longer than four hours, the body's metabolism will slow down (a remnant from our hunting/gathering days, as a conservation reaction in times of food scarcity).

Exercise is key, though. I have a very physical job, and people think i work out because i am so lean. I can eat everything i want all day long every day because i burn it all off. Of course i stay away from heavy fried foods. Without the fried foods, it's actually kind of hard to eat 2000 calories a day.

Have you ever seen a 2000 calorie pile of green beans?

I don't think losing a limb is really considered losing weight... though you might weigh less without that arm or leg.

The easy answer to losing weight is only eat celery....you burn off more calories, chewing and digesting it than you gain from eating it.

Here’s a better idea. Eat more yet smaller meals during the day. Don’t be lazy. It’s easier and more effective than just eating less and exercising. Eating less will help reduce your metabolism which actually makes it easier to gain weight. By eating smaller portions at more intervals you help keep you metabolism going. You don’t really need to exercise so long as you keep busy.

Weight Watchers works really well.
You get a certain amount of points per day, based on what you weigh and your predetermined goal weight (based on age, height, etc).
Certain foods are worth certain amounts of points.
A Big Mac is like, 20. An apple is 1. Tomatoes and steamed broccoli are 0.
I am currently allowed 26 points per day. If you eat a lot less than your points allow, your body goes into this "starvation mode" and starts conserving more fat.
I've been on this a few months, loosely. I haven't really followed the points scale much, and I've lost over 25 pounds. It doesn't really feel like a diet, just little changes.
The other day I got a toaster sandwich from Sonic, and I was gagging because it was so greasy and bleh.. Befor I started WW, I ate those all the time. Now I can't stand them.
It's really cool.
The only exercise I do is walking: a mile or so a day, usually less, but it's really working.

Or you can listen to Rush Limbaugh!

Plus the country needs fat people. I can flick them off when they're coming out of Mcdonalds or pizza hut. Or I can shout out the window "Hey Fatass you really need that hamburger!"

So they're a nice little comical element to our soicety.

It has a lot to do with metabolism too, doesn't it? Some people naturally gain weight and others don't. I've never watched what I've eaten and yet I'm skinny enough to suffer constant harangues from my friends about how I'm anorexic.

I eat in moderation. I stay away from junk food. If you look in your grocer mart, there are plenty of yummy healthy foods that you can buy that are just as good as their junk food counterparts. Mind you, I haven't completely sworn off junk food, but, I don't eat a lot, in fact I eat very little. If you just eat a bit then it doesn't feel like a diet, even though you're eating healthier foods.

I also workout at home. I don't pay to go to the gym. We have weights, punching bag and a bike. I rotate between those. If you don't have these, just grab your favourite CD and dance for at least 30 min. It is fun if you enjoy the music. ;) or if you have PS or PS2, get DDR and a pad... It'll do wonders.

There is also jogging, power walking, sit ups, push ups, jumping jacks, sports... Exercising doesn't have to be a chore. Find what your favourite physical activiity is and just go out and workout using it.

Aha, but this can also work in reverse, where the fatso gets even bigger due to the trauma. Also remember the hoary old tale of: girl meets boy, girl gets complacent and fat, boy complains about girl being fat sow, girl goes to gym and loses weight, girl meets weightlifting stud, girl dumps boy just when she stops being a fat sow.

By far the best weight-loss technique is to put the goddamn fork down.

I don't worry about weight too much at all. If my fitness and strength are up and I look alright, then I don't care if I'm 'overweight'
