Saw them both last night in concert. That was an incredible show. I love Southern Rock, and last night was a great concert for Southern Rock. Skynyrd played all the classics, and the crowd was a sea of lighters during Freebird. During Sweet Home Alabama, just like always, they brought out the old Confederate Flag, and the crowd roared. It was great. It warms my heart, to think that today, in the year 2004, with Political Correct lunacy spreading everywhere, and controversy over the Confederate Flag and racism, that it the colors of Dixie can be displayed in a gigantic Confederate Flag at a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert and everybody in the house loves it. I loved it, it was great. They dedicated Simple Man to Leon Wilkeson, who recently died, and it was so heartbreaking I cried. I actually cried while I was singing along. I also cried during Freebird, lamenting the fact that so many from the band have died, and that I was born too late to see the original line-up of Lynyrd Skynyrd.
The Allman Brothers Band came out next, and played for 2 hours. That was a great show too. Dicky Betts is no longer in the band, so they did not play his songs, but they played a lot of the old Brothers material, like Midnight Rider, Southbound and Whipping Post. They ended with Southbound, but the crowd cheered them back on for a 15 minute encore version of Whipping Post. It was excellent. Also, the Brothers played The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, originally by The Band. The crowd loved it, sang along, and the whole place roared when they mentioned Robert E. Lee. The Brothers, as always, played in their traditional Bluesy Jam kind of way, and extended many of their songs way past the regular ending points. The two guitarists, Warren Haynes and Derrick Trucks, were phenomenal. I have never seen anyone play as well, and differently, as Derrick.
If you have a chance to see this show, the Brothers and Skynyrd are still touring, and if there is a show near you, I would highly recommend going to see it.
