For those sports (particularly, baseball) fans, Ichiro has done it! He's broken Sisler's 84-year old record for most hits in a single season - 258!

Congrats to Ichiro!

Great. Ichiro has just earned himself his induction into the Hall of Fame. Makes me wonder, is Sadaharu Oh already in the HoF?

Not according to this page (http://www.baseballhalloffame.org/hofers_and_honorees/lists/alph.htm), and I wouldn't get Ichiro suited up just yet either. Remember, Roger Maris held the single season home run record for over 30 years, and he's not in there, and that's a considerably higher profile record than the hits record is. Not to diminish what Ichiro has done, but he needs a few more great years to get into the Hall, I think.

Well, Ichiro has put up numbers in his first 4 years that no one else has ever put up.

I would definitely set up some wall space in Cooperstown for Ichiro. As for Roger Maris, he's paying unfairly for breaking Babe Ruth's single-season HR record. Playing alongside Joe DiMaggio and Yogi Berra probably doesn't help him much either. As for Sadaharu, I think he's being punished for playing in Japan, as if it matters...a homer is hard to hit, regardless of where you play.

Hey, if Ichiro keeps it up for another 5 years or so, gets over 2,000 hits (I'll lower that bar because he started in the US so late), then I'll be at the front of the line yelling for his inclusion. All I'm saying is that it's not sealed yet--my bet is that, barring major injury, he'll make it to the Hall.

As for Oh, he ought to be in there on some sort of special exemption, and I'm betting he will be one day.

Maybe we ought to talk baseball more often, Panhandlia. We do so much better with this than with politics. :D

Sports IS a universal language...except for soccer. Metric football just doesn't do it for me. My son will be highly encouraged to take on baseball and swimming when he is old enough.

And now, time for me to cuddle up with the Mrs, as we watch something romantic on the DVD. I think she rented "50 First Dates." Let's see if Adam Sandler still has it.

Ichiro has 159 now... and is coming up to bat in a couple min once we get to bottom of 8th... I think ESPN is showing each of his at bats tonight, but don't hold me to it...

And, ya, he's at outstanding performer... about the best arm, speed, and overall defence in MLB... he gets all kinds of hits... hell, he's best lead-off man in baseball... no doubt...

And, ya, he's put up more hits in ANY FOUR SEASONS than ANYONE in baseball... and that's in the FIRST four seasons after coming over from JAPAN... I doubt anyone else could do anything like that... well, obviously no one has yet, except for him... if he keeps this up, he will be a first-ballot hall of famer... (And I still say Edgar should be a hall of famer, too... after all, he's the best DH ever, among the greatest right handed hitters ever, and ya, so he "only" has 300 some odd homeruns and "only" 2000 some odd hits, and is "only" ranked 22nd in all time doubles, but keep in mind, he played his first season (not starting, but first time in MLB) at age 27... if he started earlier, think of the numbers he'd put up... Oh, ya, and he "only" as a .314 career ba... but, ya, sorry about that... back to ICHIRO!)

I think this new record can hold easily for another 84 years... who else thinks so?

I was watching. It was absolutely beautiful.

Ichiro is such a great all around player. Sure, he may not be a homerun hitter, but there is so much more to the game than just that.

(Remind me to never, ever post in General again - it doesnt feel good as an NS-ite ;))

(Oh yes, you can also go ahead and wonder about Singaporean baseball fans.)

I tuned in to the game about a half-hour late, with Ichiro and Winn aboard in the first, but managed to catch the record-breaking hit. I say well done Ichiro. He's doing Asia proud, and has proved that even though his team aren't exactly the best (let's see, the Mariners are bottom of their division...), he still can produce some magical stuff.

Just a quick Asian view on things.
