I voted pound just to even up the stats. I have no idea what it all means.

huh?

Americans call the hash sign # "pound" because it comes out of the pound key (shift+3) on the keyboard.

British people call it hash because they know what a pound sign looks like

£

In fact people all over the english speaking world are starting to call it "square" because automatic phone services say "press the square key on your telephone keypad" because so many people have no idea that the sign is called hash or pound.

EDIT I'm trying to get a pound sign by using £ but this interface clearly doesn't want me to do that.
