Strong US Federal Govt - Good or Bad?

I find it curious that the people who support the war in Iraq and lots of similar actions are also very often the people who support small government, and defend gun ownership by saying it is necessary to prevent the federal government from using military force against them.
So someone with this set of beliefs thinks
a) there should be lower taxes and less government
b) there should be an expensive federal military with great power
c) people should own guns to prevent the federal military getting too much power
d) if the federal military comes after them they should be prepared for armed struggle
e) people who own guns and use them against the federal military when that federal military drives thanks through their town are terrorists and deserve everything they get
Do they just like guns or something? Do they really think that it's ok for the michigan militia or whatever to prepare for federal invasion but a terrible evil for the fallujah militia to do the same?

War would be a lot more fun if people didn't have to die to do it. You know, two sides going at it with baseball bats. And the losers lying on the ground holding their concussed heads at the end going, "Okay, I see your point."

I'm still waiting for the day the government says "Let's invade $smallCountry" and everyone says, "na, i'm going shopping".
But I had a serious point. Stop funning.

You are asking a lot from me. Especially when one asks political questions that are practically rhetorical.
I have no ability to understand the motivations of the two major parties except their constant and inane effort to define eachother by the teensy little petty differences, and not by what they actually DO.
Its kind of an oversimplification the way you put it, but for the most part..having grown up around those kinds of people....yeah. As far as guns go, they can be fun, and in rural areas people actually DO still suppliment their food by hunting. Venison living wild and free has a lot less artificial hormones and antibiotics than anything you can get in the store. I myself enjoy firing off a few rounds into a coffee can or milk jug sometimes I havent actually fired it at a living creature yet though.

because what they actually DO is acquire wealth and power for themselves and their friends. which is just the same for both of them. still, i don't think i mentioned parties. i was talking about gunlovers. come on, say something political. This is my first thread and it's going really badly so far. I thought it was quite a good one.

well that at least is a good thing. I can see the attraction of firing ranges, i really can. I can see the beauty of the powerful precision engineering of guns. I just don't find it a convincing reason to hold absurdly contradictory viewpoints that basically boil down to "it's great for me to have lots of guns, but really shitty for anyone else".

*shrug* I don't think I can. I am the living contradiction. I'm a pro-gun person who believes that guns are tools for the weak.

I don't think there's a contradiction in admitting you're weak. Some people just are weak. If you're one of 'em go ahead and admit it. I'm weak, and I love it.

I don't begrudge people a little protection for their houses. A guy breaks in at night. I'm groggy, and muddy-headed. Would I rather reach for the baseball bat or the sawed off? Easy choice.
ANd, of course, for the defense of your country from enemies both foreign and domestic. That's possibly the single most important reasons to have guns.
I think any other use of guns is a sign of weakness. SOme are stronger than others. Hunting, for instance. It's only a mild weakness. Killing yor own food is impressive. But doing it with a rifle doesn't impress me in the slightest. Bow hunters impress me. And anybody who can hunt and kill a deer with a knife or a spear is a REAL MAN! :D
'Personal protection'? Triple weak. People need to beat eachother up more. There'd be less killings and people might actually learn a thing or two in the process. Even if it's just when to duck.
Hunting isnt about impressing people...well for some it is. A lot of hunting is done for food at least in my area of the country.

Which is why it's only mild. Some people have to eat. *shrug*

Hunting for food in the same way that barbecues are for cooking, ie there are much easier more efficient ways to do it, and it's basically a recreational activity.
Yes but in my area people replace ease and efficiency for saved cash on the food budget. A good sized elk can keep a family fed for quite a while if you have a large freezer.

Ha! Take out b) and e) and you'd have my opinion. Stupid inconsistent conservatives. Nanananabooboo! (Sorry, I'm very tired. I'm on the night shift after working most of the day.)

I'm a Libertarian - I favor a smaller government with less power. That doesn't mean I want it to be unstable, tho.

Big central government=Bad, IMO.
