Why are Texans so rude (as a whole) to their neighbors? I mean NM and OK specifically, but LA probably holds too...
And Mexico, can't forget the hoards of illegal immigrants...
Jarridia
29-09-2004, 18:50
Well, for the most part we like New Mexico, and we especially like Louisiana (MMM can't go wrong with Crawfish and Oysters), but Oklahoma, we just can't stand them. One is because of the whole Red-River Shoot-out (Football between OU and Texas), another is because the people clash. They don't like us, and we don't like them. I believe part of Oklahoma was part of Texas at one time until the US divided it.
And yeah, we don't like Mexico because of all the illegal immigrants. I believe whites just became a minority, but I'm not sure about that...it may just be here in San Antonio, where I went to college last year.
EDIT: Just noticed you were from Oklahoma. Stupid Okie! :p

actually my understanding was that Oklahoma was indian territory and reservations up until the Oil Boom.
No one had any interest in that area until Oil.

What about those Texan wines? I heared that it was forbiden to sell them inside Texas, that is why they were expoted to the rest of the US. I've been told that they can buy it now in their homestate but that is recently.
Quit strange phenomen.
BTW, I tasted it and must say that there is still a lot of work to do.

29-09-2004, 19:32
Yeah, there are quite a few vineyards around Austin (where I'm from). I have tasted our wine too, its ok, but like you said, it needs work.
We're always trying to find a way to piss off California. In example, Austin is trying to become the next Hollywood, and for the longest time Austin was rivaling Silicon Valley for Technology. *sigh* Good times.
I don't remember it being illegal, but..eh...most Texans overlook laws about alcohol.

The Texan tourists we get there, on the average, are rude, inconsiderate, and filthy rich. Opposite from us new mexicans in every way :p (heehee). because Texans by nature just aren't prone to false modesty!
(hey, that was too easy and I just couldn't resist)
Although I have to say, to the author of the thread, I used to love it back in the old Southwest Conference days when UH kicked your butts in football and basketball (too bad those days are REALLY long over)
I miss Texas, especially Houston, Austin, Galveston, New Braunsfels, and La Grange... and bluebonnets, Blue Bell Ice Cream and Shiner Bock beer
and a properly cooked chicken fried steak
but how about those Astros!

Yeah, I'm not sure about that slow driving comment either. I'm from Houston and it seems to me that as long as a cop isn't around people are at least going 10 miles over the speed limit unless it is in a neighborhood. If you are going the speed limit, then you are going slow and even cops will speed past you (which they do).

About that speeding comment, I drive about 10 over, and people still always pass me on the highway, or just regular streets. I live in DFW, by the way. Crazy ass metroplex.
And about the rich comment, I live in an area where there is a 4 city spectrum, with Euless(Useless) at the bottom, with about 2000 square foot homes, and Southlake at the top, pushing 7500 square foot homes. And most of us in the lower two brackets are nice, while the rich boys and girls with their Escalades are rude. Calling all of us Texans mean isn't appreciated.

Is there anything "small" in Texas as you claim everything is bigger in Texas (apart from English capability of GW Bush) ?
Jarridia
13-10-2004, 14:19
I can't really think of anything noteworthy that is "smaller than something else." For the most part, Texas got the whole "Everything is bigger in Texas" statement because of these things: For the longest time we were the biggest state in the US *shakes fist at Alaska*, Our State capitol dome is larger than the US Capitol dome, and the San Jacinto Monument is taller than the Washington Monument. There are others, and we used to have the largest city by land size, but Los Angeles surpassed it by far.

well I am biased, as I am from Houston and people from Houston are convinced that they are generally superior to people from Dallas (and the other way around.. oddly enough, in California LA and SF feel the same about each other)

But the Phoenix, AZ airport has more carts, more automatic sidewalks, etc. The only ~real~ problem with Sky Harbor is the HUGE ramp heading into the terminals. It's a real pain to push a wheelchair up that. Still, in all, the terminals are FAR closer to eachother than they were in Dallas, Ft. Worth (and besides, it's not designed in a donut, they're in aisles so one's got a pretty good shot at being fairly close to one's terminal even if it is changed).

And for those who are interested (question was asked way back why texas dislikes its neighbors). The Red River Shootout started because the Oklahoma National Guard and the Texas Rangers almost went to war to figure out which state controlled the Red River in the 1930's(they had both state borders literally barricaded and barbwired). The US Government obviously was not too happy about this and forced the states to settle in the supreme court (Oklahoma got the Red River btw), and while the OK National Guard and the Texas Rangers didn't fight it out, their football teams did and its been that way ever since.
(I might have got a few facts wrong or this may have already been stated, don't know but figured i'd post it anyway)

I'm not so fond of DFW either, for the record. I've had to walk at least a mile between terminals..I swear. Ah..oh well.It was exercise.
Jarridia, Texas only put on that stupid statue on their capital just so it would be taller than the US one. I find this sad.:-p

It happens daily, and again today. 4 lanes, that would be an 8 plex. Far right doing like 40, then 45, 50, and maybe the idgit in the left lane doing 55. True, the speed limit is only 60, but geez, I believe in 9 is fine. I have made some of them move, my rig is slightly large, and I think their machoism fades to being scared, that sure is a big FORD emblem on the front of that vehicle that's about to run me over, as I'm less than a foot off their bumper.
This is El Paso, so is it really Texas?
It has been years since I was driving through San Antonio, Houston, Dallas etc.

THE GRATE STATE OF TEXAS WILL ONLY BE FOR THE PEOPLE WHEN ALL THOSE !@#$%^* DEMERCRATES ARE OUT OF IT. NOW I DON'T THICK THAT REPUBLIKINES ARE ENY BETER, AND I START UP THE TRUE POEPLES PARTY IN A HART BEET IF I COULD BUT DEMERCRATES ARE A BUNCH OF SOFT COMUNISTES THAT SHOULD BE ROUNDED UP AND SHOT. AND YES WE NEED TO GET RID OF THIS GOVENER TOO.
TEXAS is the best state because it jest is, the people are a people that will do whot needs to be done and do it right. From New Mexico to Colorodo does not like us because that are no longer a part of this state, but that might jest chang.
And I don't know but a few people that don't like Mexico, espeshily their wimon.
with any luck, this guy hasn't registered to vote but my guess he typed this after drinking a lot of Pearl beer

Its too bad that you people dont realize that folks from Austin beat both Dallas and Houston out.
BTW the post up above is not representative of Texans. I am trying to figure out exactly what country he is from. Any native English speaker could spell "just", "Democrats", and "Governer".
I love Austin myself, but I am pretty sure that whoever designed the Austin freeway system was an Aggie, trying to get even for a loss to the Longhorns...
last time I was there in 1994 it seemed so badly designed that it seemed to have been done that way on purpose

Well ... Lone Star was bought by Pabst, so ... you know ... :D
My house in NE Texas has a basement ... well ... more properly it's a root cellar, but a basement nonetheless. Of course, Houston, well, I can't imagine anyone putting a basement down there. Basement flooding would be an awful problem.
I didn't know about Pabst / Lone Star, but I have been away for 10 years sad to say..
nope, no basements in Houston, damn clay is too hard to deal with (it sticks to everything) for starters and after all Houston is basically just a swamp

Maybe it was just America West airlines that sucked then, I will never fly with them again.... 30 minutes to change planes, and it took me 23 minutes to get from one gate to the other....(that was pre 9/11 so probably even more horrible now)

What happens if you "mess with a texan" ?
well the saying comes from a stop litter campaign "Don't Mess With Texas" and the commercial for it originally had a guy driving down the road, tossing out a beer can, and a couple of seconds later, a B17 (from the Confederate Air Force which is based in Texas) flying low over the road, opening its bomb bay doors, with a voice announcing that the target was in sight.
I loved that commercial

True statement. It's still bad - in fact, it's worse than it was in '94... :(

Because Oklahoma just rules. So. Very. Much. :D
Hehheh, cool, I was actually born in Texas but have lived in New Mexico the vast majority of my life... so I definitely consider myself New Mexican and definitely don't like Texan tourists. Where are you from in NM?
Amen, my friend. Down with the corrupt regime! Abolish the oppresive electoral college system!
Oklahoma shut out Texas because Bob Stoops freakin owns Mack Brown. :(
