Is it time for a bottle and a nap?

While I agree that there is no universal meaning to human existence, the collective life of humanity has meaning to those people who give it meaning. In other words, if a person believes that their lives are just a prequel to the afterlife, then their lives have meaning at least to them, just as one who is waiting for the sun to explode. This following sentence may be circular but I can't seem to find another way to describe it at the moment: the meaning to life is basically the act of adopting a philosophy that will grant meaning to the individual, and by eventual extension, the society.

I don't think that people who worship a diety in the hopes of an afterlife are idiots, I just think they're scared. The sooner these people realise this, the sooner they can move on to a much more productive philosophy of life that is not based on fear of death or threat of punishment for disobediance: secular humanism.

Or perhaps we're people who have a respect for traditions that have been handed down, and maybe, just maybe, WERE inspired by a supernatural being who spoke to our distant theological ancestors, given that science has never conclusively proven that God does not exist?

You offer me definitive proof that God does not exist, and then I'll put up my traditions and religious exercises.

In fact, I'd be on my way to becoming the most notoriusly deadly person ever. I would have absolutely no remorse, conscience or fear of punishment. the less introspective ones are following a family tradition that brings them great comfort

i say better safe than sorry. i believe religion and if i'm wrong... oh well.... but if i'm right then i get to spend an eternity in the perfect place. and for people who say "eat drink and be merry for tomorrow we die" they'll end up in a place of eternal torment.

You know, you're not making religion look any better by saying that. It's because of people like you that many see religion as just a crutch for the morally weak, those who cannot behave responsibly without the threat of retribution (and you're basically saying that you are one of these morally weak individuals, but for some reason you seem to be proud of it).

Well....I have a question....most of you people think that "religious" people are not in reality....then may I ask, what is reality?....Is it your own personal belief of what reality is?...Define exactly what reality is...
I personaly dont like the word RELIGIOUS because anyone can be religious....religion is nothing more than ritualistic and dead nonsense ...I believe its about faith....and people who do not believe in the Supreme Maker can not comprehend what "believing" truely is....as most of you said...its religion....thus you dont grasp the full understanding....You think you do; you think on the earthily level but actually you dont understand....

Why should this "fact" be cause for celebration? Perhaps it ought not to make people depressed, but it seems to me that you're really the unreasonable one. It is human instinct to find meaning in the world about him. He creates stories, art, music, civilization, because he finds meaning in these things. You find meaning---yes, you do, or else you would not have bothered to make this post---in the strength and reasonableness you think you have in facing what you consider to be a meaningless and pointless existence. You are your own hero, and the religious types are the silly dupes you are condescending to save from their false hopes.

Umm . . . calm down - I dont like fundie as much as the next person, but I think that militant atheists aren't any better. I dont like that religion has an aspect to it that keeps people from thinking for themselves, and some people use religion as a crutch (like jihadists), but please, don't be so angry.

actually, it is religion that has perpetuated the misconception that life without an intelligent designer must be the result of random chance. science repeatedly and thoroughly refutes the idea that humans exist purely by chance, and, indeed, the very laws of the universe make it necessary for life to exist exactly the way it does. there is no need for an intelligent designer to have order, purpose, and reason behind life, and i deeply pity anybody who thinks that is the case.

That whole people who are into religeon are whimps kind of sound racist to me.

I'm supposed to be a catholic. I go to church and an all girls catholic school. But I don't really believe in it that much. However I don't think all people with religeon are whimps. This thought, that they could actually go beyond death and whatever actually strengthens alot of them. Some of the strongest peopl in history followed a religeon.
