GEEEZ i spent $5.25 of my hard earned money on that piece of crap.
i drove 50 miles to los lunas to see it
it was so bad that i didnt even stay to the end. i realized that i just didnt give a damn what happened next so i might as well just move on

couldnt SOMEONE have warned me that it has no plot, no setting, no POINT.
it has good actors who cant even be bothered to put any effort into their performances.

Well, it's usually best to wait for some reviews, instead of going early cause you hafta stand in a long line.

Action packed films usually have no plot, like AvP.

It has a long name for a movie.

And it's about Britain :D

its an hour and 15 minutes ill never get back (ya ya the movie is longer than that but i did walk out)

Not entirely.
2. Time travel
No time travel. Maybe you're thinking about Terminator
3. Black & white
Nope. Hypercolor in some instances.
4. Only one major male character: the protagonist
Two, Sky Captain and Dex the techie who drives the plot. Two women, two men. Not bad.

Maybe you where watching a different trailer?

I loved the movie. But then, I like film and understood the reference and enjoyed the filmmakers celibration of the form, especially using the new techniques to tell the stories film tried to tell 70 years ago.

It's not for everyone. Hey, I thought The Matrix was a giant pile of crap. To each his/her own.

Not to nitpick or be all film snobby, but unless you watch the movie to the end, you really shouldn't be able to comment on it as a whole. It's not your thing, fine. But if you didn't watch the whole thing your opinion of it is naturally devalued. Many movies (I'm not saying this one, it's quite obvious it went over your head early :) ) contain the key at the end. M. Night Shamylan makes his career on it.

(I'm kidding about it going over your head, but you did seem to miss the point. Not a value judgement)

i weighed that possibilty before leaving.
then i realized that i didnt care what happened next. didnt care if the earth was saved, didnt care if dex was found alive, dint care if they would end up in love, dint care if they got eaten by the dinosaur like creatures on the island

the movie is an utter failure. i hope the next time they try this technique they put more effort into getting a plot and a director who can get actual performances out of the actors.

No, first one. Never even bothered with the other two (so I won't give a qualitative analysis, didn't see 'em) But the first...ugh....

An 'all you need is love' ending? Humans would make horribly innefficient batteries. Concept exceded exicution (I realize that people could argue that last criticism on Sky Captain, which is fair. But I would disagree as many do with my assessment of Matrix and how I hated, I say HATED Rent.)

I don't want to go on. Scars. Almost on the same wound list as Dark City and The Crow.

But really, to get a grasp on my asthetic, google the strange part of my signature...

I thought the plot was pretty clear and consistant with the genre. No more or less complex than robot coming back through time to kill the mother of the revolution leader, or any other science fiction/action things. The acting was also pretty consistant, though I would have liked more snap to Polly. It was still, as someone on imdb.com pointed out, the Lois Lane archtype. Thier relationship was pretty complex, actually, considering the genre. I don't know if you left before you found that out or not.

The 'middle of the story' feel was fantastic I thought. All and all, I was pretty satisfied.

Yeah, that was the impression I got. Actually, one of the two people I've talked to who have actually seen it said it was the worst movie they'd ever seen. Personally, I don't see how any movie could be worse than Signs, although I never saw the third Matrix movie.

dont EVEN TRY to compare the day the earth stood still with sky captain

*hands waggling in frustration*

that they WANTED to make a great 30s sci fi serial movie is interesting. but they utterly FAILED to get any of the spirit required. its not even good CAMP like the buck rogers (or was that flash gordon?) movie was.

oh yeah, Menoparchia, i love memento. its the only movie i ever saw that i had to watch again immediately afterwards and enjoyed it as much the second time. AND the third time when i made the rest of the fam watch it too

Flash Gordon. Buck Rodgers was made into a tv show that tried to borrow off Battlestar Gallactica and Star Trek. And that was bad.

Spoofing 30's serials is pointless, tributing them was fantastic.

No ones doing it here, but I don't belong to the imdb.com forums (since, as you can see, I can get dragged into these things pretty easy when all we're really discussing is differences of taste....) but comparing this film as a genre film to Raiders of the Lost Arc to illustrate Sky Captain as a failure is faulty. Raiders... comes from genre revisionist movement, perhaps the last great example. Flash Gordon may have been ahead of it's time in the new genre film that is exampled in movies like The Quick and the Dead, Tarantino films, and Scream.

While Scream (which I hated, but is beside the point) did have it's fun, it took the tenants that it was built on seriously, and in order to really pull from the movie all that was there, there had to be a familiarity with the genre (teen slashers). It did not reinvent the genre or modernize it. It obsorbed it.

Flash Gordon did commit, but it has been a while since I've seen it-and I have since come to understand genre film so I can't say for sure how it fits in. But I am putting the theory together right now and you have reminded me there is a film out there I have to look at.

I would argue that Sky Captain had all the camp, how can you not read camp into Dex's heat gun, or the "Mysterious Woman," or even the kidnaping scientests plot-I can't tell you how much of the old scifi radio I've collected has similar plots.

This is too long, people aren't reading anymore.

ya but even when you watch those old sci fi serials on tv they are FUN. the "special effects" are ridiculous you can sometimes even see the threads holding the space ships up in the air.
but they are FUN. it looks like everyone had a good time making them.

even the stupid buck rogers take off on star trek voyager was more interesting than this.

sky captain COULD have been a good movie. the concept is fine by me, the execution sucked. i blame the director for getting lost in the concept and forgetting that it all has to hang together. (not unlike some video games that look great but have sucky gameplay)

Sky Captain was a decent movie. Not the best of all time, but okay. Grabbed a lot from many genres - sci fi, adventure, superhero, monster movies... thought it was a bit artistic even. And it's one I can let my kid watch, when she's a little older (5 now) and don't have to worry about cursing and sex.

Now if you want to discuss a colossal waste of film, that was Gangs of New York. All that time to maybe resolve the plot, or even have a moral to the story, and, well, the movie just kind of ends. That's it. And the more interesting thing about the movie was the subplot of the riots over drafts during the Civil War. Baaad movie.

Hey, the gang fight at the beginning rocked. Totally. Thumbs up. But yeah, as a Scorcese film, it's a bit of a disappointment.

WHICH I WAS WARNED ABOUT SO I DIDNT GO SEE
had huge problems that were well publicized
the director had to cut bunches out and it ruined the plot
such as it was
i wondered if the directors cut was any more watchable

We tend to analyze movies so much nowadays that we forget that its all about entertainment. I watched 'Paparazzi' and had a blast. Why? Because its just for shits and giggles. Predictable? Yes. Fun. Yes.

I've yet to see Sky Captain, but I want to see it.

I also think that the Matrix was a great movie, not because its feasable, but because it was entertaining and brought some wicked special effects to the industry.

It's because actors don't have to be judged by a Director and dozens of crew members in a cartoon sutdio, they can role out of bed and read straight off their script with noone knowing... except when their acting is flatter than Ally McBeal's chest.

Even though I used feasability in my argument against The Matrix, I'll give you the feasability thing. I think its a big drag on scifi to worry about if something could happen. It shouldn't be about 'could it happen' but whats being said by having it happen.

I didn't like The Matrix or what was being demonstrated. I do like the trend it started of clear action sequences that are followable, I'll give that. The best demonstration of that was the old shaky camera fights in The League of Extrordinary Gentlemen. Just crap. But asian cinema was already making it's infuence on american action and clear choregraphy was coming.

But Matrix isn't he point of the thread. I'm just a sucker for talking about film.

Sky Captain is a ride, you'll like it.
