It's now the RNCs' turn.

Apparently, a mailer was sent out allegedly from the RNC stating that if Kerry is elected then the "men will start marrying men, and the bible will be banned".
When contacted about it, a spokesman from the RNC said in effect while he hadnt heard about the mailer, it could have come from the RNC.

They're right about gay marriage, but wrong about banning the bible.

Actually, I dont believe that the President has any real affect on gay marriage in this country. I believe that it's a matter that will be decided in the states/courts.
However, I agree with you that Democrats do not have any desire to completely ban the bible.. just severly limit it's distribution :p

Eh? After Bush just tried to force a constitutional amendment through??? Sure he doesn't actually vote on it, but presidents have influence in Congress. Anyhow, it will come before the US Supreme Court in due time, probably after half the states (the same ones that banned interracial marriage back in the day, incidentally) have changed their constitutions. Only a matter of time. Things like these never just "get decided by the states".

Just keep it out of public schools, and I'm happy. :p

Well, Bush did fail miserably in trying to cram an amendment through Congress...it didn't even get the "moral victory" of a simple majority in the Senate, let alone the necessary two-thirds. And of course states are going to ban gay marriage, and the courts are going to tell them to take their amendments and cram them where the sun don't shine, but at least there's a debate on the matter. It's not like a half century ago, when there may not have been a fight like this, but only because it was so socially unacceptable to be gay that the law didn't even have to intervene; society shut homosexuality down on its own.

Oh come on, that was just a sop for the Christian Right during an election year. He knew full well it wouldnt even come close to passing. This isnt like playing the lotto, you go around and sort out who is gonna vote how behind closed doors, then you introduce bills. That is, if your actual intent is to get it passed.

Yes and no. They can strike down the amendments, but the case has to be sent to them. They cant just strike down the amendments without it being heard in the lower courts.

In that case, it is just a matter of time.

I wonder how the US Supreme Court will rule. They went 6-3 in striking down the Texas law banning gay sex...we'll see if they split 5-4 or 4-5 on gay marriage.

I guess. But it might be considered embarrassing that they couldn't even get a majority, I guess it all depends how you view the amendment, whether you feel the president was "making a stand for traditional America against the horde of godless liberals" or "pandering to the Christian fascists".

Damn. I'd heard about this and fully expected that it was a local party move at best, probably a group without open ties to the Republican party, but to find out it's the national party doing it just blows my mind.

I got one of the mailers earlier in the week. They are saturating West Virginia with them. It seems to be backfiring royally here among a majority of those who've received them. Its been the talk all week and even the most fervent Bush supporters around here are upset with them. A few have called it un-Christian behavior. It has also prompted a stepping up in public support from the Manchin family here, one of the most popular political families in the state
