1. Star Wars, John Williams at his best
2. Field of Dreams, Horner at his best, made me cry at the end when he finally plays catch with his father
3. Phantom of the Opera, Coming out December of this year. I have seen the musical, and this movie is based on the Andrew Lloyd Weber musical. He was briliant in this one with songs such as the title song, "Music of the Night" "All I ask of You" "Maquerade", "Think of Me" "Angel of Music," and "Point of no return". The movie will be good even if the acting sucks just because of the music.

I don't know if Godfather would count as I believe that the music in it was not written for the movie and is an old Sicilian tune IIRC.

1. Starwars. Not because the music was good ,by good I mean not according to the pop chart, but because of how it added to the movie. It help provide a understanding of the character emotions, and add things that could not be otherwise portrayed (eg Imperial March).

2. Gladiator. Same reason as starwars.

3. Knockin' on Heaven's Door. Music in the movie fit really well with what was occuring at that part of the movie.

Great now I want to go watch them all

*Runs down stairs to grab Knockin' on Heaven's Door.

1. Star Wars (again)
2. Jurassic Park (John Williams again)
3. Lord of the Rings Trilogy

And there are many other great ones I can think of, like Schindler's List, JFK and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. I'm sure there are more but I can't think of any now.

1. Star Wars or Indiana Jones, you pick

1. Star Wars (Entire Original Trilogy)

2. The Godfather

3. The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly
Talk about setting the bar. And the quote in your sig is pretty cool, too.

I don't know that I can top this.

I like the score to Naked Lunch, but I like Ornette Coleman.

Nope. That's a pretty good list. Can't top it at this moment.

I'd have to say:

1) Star Wars; like almost everyone else. Tappee was right in how the music adds such emotion and depth to the story. Hell, I just got done watching it on DVD (Damn it looks so much better on DVD).
2) Lord of the Rings; pretty much same reason as Star Wars, puts the emotion into something almost palpable.
3) Conan The Barbarian; no one really notices the score in this but it is really good, albeit breif compared to some others, but god nonetheless.

If you get a chance, you all should check this (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00000I7VZ/ref=m_art_li_1/104-3550875-2289511?v=glance&s=music) out.

Lounge versions of the Star Wars themes. I'm tellin' ya. Most notable, the Emperor's Theme takes on a whole new feel (imagine harem-style imperial guards flinging viels about) and the cantina song is virtually unchanged.

1. North by Nothwest. great chromatic flourish with a powerful resolution. Awsome music.
2. 12 Monkeys I do like the little tango tunes and the like in the bacground made for a sense of the confusion of the film.
3. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Tan Dun at his best dynamic and sweet.

1) The Godfather - A true classic in all aspects of a movie
2) Saving Private Ryan - The theme at the aftermath of the landings was perfect.
3) Both the recent Spider-Man movies - frankly I think its a very underrated movie, notice the use of romantic/epic theme tunes in the background when approriate.

the best film scores ever? So far we have plenty of John Williams, and a little Hans Zimmer, but I'm shocked no one has yet mentioned a work of Danny Elfman

1) Batman- or Edward Scissorhands. They are so different, but both represent Elfman at his best
2) Brazil- by Micheal Kayman. The music was central to the film in the characterization of everything. It's great how Kayman worked a pre-existing cheesy song into such a defining score.
3) Gladiator- by Hans Zimmer- The violent theme is really a brutalized Walts.

Now, if i may be ostentatious, i would like to nominate a few videogame scores for regognition, as some are every bit as driven and emotional as film scores-
keeping in threes

Final Fantasy 8 by Nobuo Uemetsu
Chrono Trigger by Yasinari Matsuda
Halo- and i wish i could think of the composer's name.

I don't know if Godfather would count as I believe that the music in it was not written for the movie and is an old Sicilian tune IIRC.
Some of the music sung at the wedding was old Sicilian stuff, but the actual score was composed by Nino Rota specifically for the film.
Everything posted here is good, except for 8 Mile, which Chess Squares and I are going to have to agree to disagree on.
God am I a sucker for movie music...

Really can't put these in any particular order...

Starwars (Original trilogy, Williams' best.)
Conan the Barbarian (Iffy movie, but a brilliant score. Basil Poledouris.)
Braveheart. (Awesome. James Horner.)

1) Hunt for Red October - that Russian patriotic stuff sounds cool!
2) You'll laugh, but Star Trek 6, especially the opening score
3) Batman (Danny Elfman), especially when played for the opening of the 2004 Victoria Secret Fashion Show in High-Definition. :)

Chrono Trigger by Yasinari Matsuda

Really? That was Matsuda? I thought that was Uematsu, too. I mean, he's in the secret room and everything. Whoa...

I think Yasinari Matsuda just officially replaced Nobuo Uematsu as the awesome. Crazy.
[/off topic]

The following are in no particular order
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. I consider this soundtrack to be significantly better than the other two. (Don't hurt me!) Maybe the greater scope of the movie just meant more to work with, but I think it just came out better.

Star Wars: Episode IV. It took us to a new world in a way that no movie soundtrack has ever managed to duplicate.

Star Wars: Episode I. I have never seen a movie with better integrated music. You didn't even notice there was over two hours of music in this movie, did you? That's awesome!

Continuing the off topic tradition of video games.

Chrono Trigger is the ultimate, with FF8 a near second. I've got to disagree with H.A.L.O., though. There are a lot of games with better music. However, my choice is also odd: Bubble Bobble. In no other game did 47 seconds of music repeated over and over fail to get old. That's tough to beat.

Finally, mad props to the music of the Cowboy Bebop series. Most of it isn't original, but man is it the best stuff they could have stolen.

The song during the opening crdits for Hunt for Red October qualifies as it was written for the movie, but the song when Red October begins using the caterpillar wouldn't as it was the official national anthem of the USSR.

I like Star Trek I (also the tune for TNG), II (by James Horner), and IV more in terms of music, although VI had good music and was an awesome movie.

What a bunch of low-brows!

1. Alexander Nevsky. Composer: Sergei Prokofiev. (A kick-ass Cantata composed for USSR prewar propaganda.)
2. Requiem for a Dream. Dunno the composer.
3. Psycho, the original. Classic stuff. Also dont know the composer here.

No one will agree with me on any of this because LOTR is newer, trendier and sells a lot more. Ditto for Star Wars and any Danny Elfman/John Williams/James Horner.

I actually think fondly of the soundtrack Patrick Doyle composed for Kenneth Branagh's rendition of Hamlet. I rather wish i had mentioned it. it's calmer than most of the things we've mentioned, and definitely more subtle, but it's nice.

ok, Chrono Trigger has both names (Matsuda and Uemetsu) in the credits. At the time, we assumed that Matsuda only did some trivial work for the great composer- but it is Matsuda's name that appears on the arranged CD. Appearently Matsuda did most of the work, and left out the Uemetsu themes on the cd- ie, that's why we don't have obvious choices like Frog's or Nadia's theme.
In any case, Uemetsu's name isn't on Xenogears or Chrono Cross, and now that we can distinguish their styles, it seems like Matsuda did almost all of Chrono Trigger
