I saw this in an article and i thought it was a frase worthy of remembrance.

"When the last tree is cut, the last river poisoned, and the last fish dead, people will then realise they cant eat money."

well, ya might not be able to eat money itself, but what ya CAN eat is genetically modified food! Thanks to the R&D we fund with money, we get to create plants that can survive in the conditions we create :)

Besides, we will still have fish to eat. After all, hatcheries are funded by money arent they? Not only that, fish bred in hatcheries are easy to harvest, thus making the food distribution process that much more efficient.

Not only that, but thanks to science, we will some day be able to design bacteria to clean up the rivers we are polluting.

We won't cut down all the trees. What we Will do is control the aspects of how they grow. If you have every looked much into the palace at Versaille, you will realize that humans naturally tend to like having trees around them. The same of course is true with the 'rich' people you seem to hate. We will always have trees on the planet, the only change would be that they would all be under our control.

What is so wrong about trying to control nature?

And then they will realize that you *can* eat people.... Soylent Green, yummy.

"When the last tree is cut, the last river poisoned, and the last fish dead, people will then realise that if they had sure property rights, like a real free market, polluters could be sued for any damage they did and that they could thus have had growth without pollution, but they were all idiot socialists who thought the govt could save the environment even though it is the biggest polluter."

No, they'd never think that. Free enterprise always gets the blame for govt's failures.

You have a point, we should immediately start a petition to the IMF to produce edible money.

lol, good one... but it would have to be the Dept. of the Treasury (or whatever bureaucracy fills that post in your country). The IMF (International Monetary Fund) has nothing to do with issuing currency.

Aye, i was just trying to think of an international organisation which might be able to influence each country.

Haha I like the idea of edible money. Talk about expensive food though.

No more seriously though, I have to agree. Environmental protection is very important, and I believe polluting (esp. intentionally) should be VERY VERY heavily punished.

After all, let's put things into perspective. What's worse? One man dead or a forest destroyed, dozens of species extinct, rivers polluted beyond repair, etc.?

Yet the company gets off with fines and the murderer loses their freedom for the rest of their life.

BTW I'm not suggesting that murderer's should be let off easy, I'm just saying that companies should be punished far more heavily.

nature is a lot more complex thn you would think. trees and flowers, even the ones in parks need insects to pollonate them. the insects rely on weather patterns, air quality and temperature to survive. weather systems, air quality and temperatures are all massive systems we know very little about. everything is interrelated, there are many connections we dont know about. thats the basis of chaos theory. so to think we can just put whatever shit we want out there and cldean it up later or that were smart enough to get ourselves out of any mess we create is overly optimistic at best and naive at worst.
