Why do people group?
Normally seperation is a bad thing, but I want it to be a good thing. Heres my story I was in Italy this summer, many of them were very nice to us, others were not, I made a seperation, I didnt say, Italians are all jackasses, I said some are and some arent. Please, will you seperate us!?! Masny Europeans group us Americans, they say we all want the war, or we all support Bush, but no, I hate the war and Bush. I dont group Europeans, try understanding many of our views. Bush may get re-elected, he may not, now its pretty close, but instead of hating us, understand not all of us want him, and we are suffering. Notice the rally's the Michael Moore, all that good stuff, now, stop grouping us!
You still cling to Michael Moore?

What are you asking?
Why people group together, or why people group other people together?
My guess would be that people group themselves for protection, and they group other people simply for convenience.
You still cling to Michael Moore?
Hell Yeah! Michael Moore is a little intence but he is a great guy! He is so devoted to our country and what makes it good, and why for the past four years it hasnt been so good.

Heh, he's big enough for everyone to cling to... ;)
I think everyone groups others to some extent, even if it's not unintentional. You make opinions of certain groups of people by experience, and these opinions affect you when you see someone that acts/looks etc like them
You still cling to Michael Moore?
yes as we all should-he may slightly exagerrate at times but no one has yet to disprove any of his assertions
Consider this: there is no pipeline in Afghanistan. There is no effort to build a pipeline in Afghanistan. Unocal has no interest in a pipeline in Afghanistan.

People stereotype and group others according to predetermineed notions in order to organize and easily deal with them. The average person will come into contact with hundreds of thuosands of people in his/her lifetime, and trying to evaluate each one on an individual basis would make one's brain explode. Steretyping is a way to deal with multiple entities as a single group. For better or worse, it helps us get along in our day-to-day life.

I am a brit and i personally hate generalisation or stereotyping (grouping). The Americans are stereotyped as being stupid, ignorant and arrogant. oblivious to the world around them. This is simply bcause the vast majority of your citizens spend their entire lives in your country. You have no viable foreign policy it just refkects the selfish needs of your own country. You are the worlds largest producer of pollution and the world's largest consumer. Granted, you are also the largest, most powerful nation on earth but therin lies the problem. You are so powerful you feel you are always right and you use god as a justification for the actions of your government although you invariably act in the selfish manner that has so typied recent actions e.g Iraq.
I dont have a problem with america, in fact i quite like it but certain aspects irritate me. I realise my past paragraph was as contradiction to my opening statement but that is the international view of the americans. Even Tony Blair is unpopular here for not standing up for himself and doing something for the U.K instead of America. However you also generalise the most. Hollywood is a massive commodity in your country and it is also the most influential source of entertainment the world over. Britons are stereotyped as being posh and all the same. We do not all speak like the queen infact we have a number of regional dialects and, did you know, Britain actually consists of England, Wales Scotland and Northern Ireland. If I caused any offence I apologize unreservedly but im just speaking the mind of many British people.

STUFF
That's another thing: most stereotypes come from ignorance.
Also, Michael Moore is fat.

Stereotyping does come mainly from ignorance also arrogance. You will find that if you ask someone if they have ever been to France or not and they havent they can still give you a description of a Frenchmans persona. Its society's answer to other societies.

Technically not, Bush has a degree he is just narrow minded. He supports his own views, the views of his people and the views to get him re-elected only. He is just a patriot oblivious to the wider world.

Making generalizations about people seems to be human nature. I'm not even talking about just judging other nations. People think that people who are overweight eat a lot all of the time. That's not always true. People also think that people who are really skinny are all anorexic, which is also not always true. Generalizations are just a way of life.

Its also affected by other peoples views and historical experiences. The media is a major contributory factor in peoples views and opinions. Particularly those without the intelligence to think for themselves which is invariably who a stereotype starts with.

Not all of us are like that, just most of us. Those of us that aren't ignorant and irrational are usually hated for being left-winged. America sucks, you English have it pretty lucky to live in a country that has both a sense of humor, and a sense of reality.

England sux bad. Its expensive and the government is abysmal. Your previous paragraph has just illustrated my point perfectly. Firstly its British not English, trust me you need to be careful with stuff like that the Welsh and Scots wouldn't thank you or the Irish. Secondly if you carried on reading my earlier post you would have found my personal views differ from the views in my first paragraph. I personally like the Americans I have met, i've never had a problem with you at all. Thirdly, who cares? Your country is supposedly founded on liberty and freedom for all. Believe in what you believe and dont allow the masses to influence who you are.

I'd just like to point out that the above statement makes an indirect generalization about those with moderate or right-wing opinions-- specifically, that we are mostly ignorant, irrational, or both. This is not necessarily true.
