Best Bassist Ever?

_Susa_
23-09-2004, 01:23
Please choose on Bass-playing ability, not songwriting, vocal skills, or anything else.

My top four are:
Roger Waters- Pink Floyd
John Entwistle- The Who
John Paul Jones- Led Zeppelin
John McVie- Fleetwood Mac

See a trend? Yep, thats right, most excellent bassists are Johns.

I'd second that. Gilmour would record the bass lines on the albums but would have to make them simple so Waters could actually perform them.

so-
Charles Mingus, Jaco Pastorious, Ron Carter a few names escape me right now.....

What about Billy Sheehan?

There is a long standing argument regarding who first came up with the whole finger tapping bit. Eddy Van Halen (guitar) or Billy Sheehan (Bass).

Oh Ya!

what about Cliff Burton the now dead first bass player for metallica.

John Entwistle by far. Amazing work he did with the band in the early days. Also loved how out of touch he was during concert. Roger Daltry & the others would be just freaking out like all hell. Smashing guitars, trashing the drum sets, just breaking open everything they could their hands on. What would Entwistle be doing? Plucking the bass & minding his own business like their wasnt a single soul on stage but him! http://www.hitmanforum.com/forum/images/smiles/laugh2.gif

The guy's a legend. Bless his departed soul.

In terms of technical ability, the most talented bassist I have ever heard has got to be Sean Malone. He was in Cynic, Atheist, Aghora and some other bands. Those bands are metal, but they all show jazz influences, as Sean's favourite bassist is Jaco Pastorius.

Of mainstream pop/rock bassists, Flea is the best.

Nobody's ever heard of Stuart Hamm, have they? :)

This guy used to tour with Joe Satriani in the late '80s - I saw him in concert, once. He plays with a speed and intricacy to rival some of the best 6-string guitarists, ever. Included in one of his solos (also on one of his live tracks on an album) was a bit where he played the "Peanuts" theme (usually played on piano). It was classic. Bought two tapes, and was not at all sorry. :)

Claypool is very good.
He's a bass playing wizard as I said.
But his music cannot be enjoyed by everyone.
You HAVE to have a certain personality to really enjoy Primus.
My personal distaste for his playing is due to his over-kill.
He uses ten notes per measure, where five would have been just fine.

Techically speaking, Claypool is great.

I've palyed bass for years and am one of the most in demand players in a very strong musical comunity. I currently perform with several rock bands, several univeristy groups and play upright and am the guest electric bassist for a non-profit, semiprofessional regional symphony. I know bass. Flea does not suck. You do not have to play a lot of notes to be good, although he most definently can. You do not have to have overwhelming style to be good, and he does. You do not have to be origional, which his lines in and of themselve are not but in context they are. You have to find the perfect balance of origionality, technicality, and style, along with various other factors. Flea does this well and is a great bassist. I'd like to see you detractors play half of his stuff correctly. I bet you couldn't.

Your dodging the question.

I asked you what you thought was their greatest song.
You were asking some one else. I don't know that many Beatles songs.

You're getting off topic with your question. The question was wether or not McCartney is a great bassist.

I second this. I've tried to play RHCP several times. I couldn't. I even searched tabs from the internet which were a neat 5 pages per song.

Best thing about Flea is that he does everything with a 4-string bass

Considering that he wrote some of the greatest songs ever recorded....I would say "yes", Paul McCartney is a great bass player.

Has no one mentioned Aston "Familyman" Barrett???

The man basically invented reggae. Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny get the credit for the Wailers, Lee "Scratch" Perry gets credit for producing them, but Aston was the musical director.

Also, Geezer Butler is missing from all kinds of lists here. ;)

Songwriter does not equal Bassist

In fact both things only have "music" in common.

BTW, I haven't seen Phil Paris Lynnott (sp?) either. He's good, not the best, but I still think he should be mentioned

Flea- Chilli peppers
Sting - The Police
John Entwhistle- the Who

i'll also throw another great bassist in the ring... Mark King Level 42, this was the man who made a bass a more popular thing, he started the slap bass using his thumb and also could play conventional bass, if you ever get the chance check out Lessons in Love by Level 42 to here the bass sing.

Flea all the way. Why? Because he puts himself into everything he plays. It's not often you hear a bassist singing with his instrument. Makes me wanna pick one up and learn it.

John Entwistle is by far the best bassist EVER. Although I am personally a Pink Floyd fan and would be inclined to vote for Roger Waters, he is not a great bassist. He is a master songwriter and composer, as well as an empath, but his bass skills cannot compare to those of Mr. Entwistle. Anyone who doubts this should sit down and actually LISTEN to The Who. Try "My Generation" for starters.

The dude from Rage Against The Machine. Dunno his name, but his bass playing in Take The Power Back is the best I've ever heard.

All of the bass players mentioned are great.
Flea - who said he's an average bass player? wtf!?
Les Claypool - although i agree not everyone would like his music
Krist Novoselic
Lemmy
Paul Mcartney
John Myung - i think his bass solo on dance of eternity is kinda stupid but he's a very good bassist. few could fill dream theater's sound so good.
John Entwistle
Geezer Butler
Matt Freeman
Mike Dirnt
Tim COMMERFORD (ratm)
Jason Newsted
Cliff
Victor Wooten
Nikki Sixx
I would also like to add: Duff Mckagan from Guns n' Roses and Velvet Revolver

The rest are bassists i didn't have the chance to hear. I mostly listen to rock, punk and heavy metal so my bass playing is mostly influenced by krist novoselic, lemmy and jason newsted because i mostly play with a pick. That's it from me.

now you can go on comparing flea with paul mcartney

I too kow the feeling! I've tried to play some of the Chili's stuff on my bass, and I just can't do it. Anyone who can make a 4-string bass scream like Flea does desreves a lot of credit. A lot of these new bassists use 5-strings, and still suck!! }:(

My top four are:
Roger Waters- Pink Floyd
John Entwistle- The Who
John Paul Jones- Led Zeppelin
John McVie- Fleetwood Mac.

Lemme guess. You're also a bass player named John? ;)

Glad to see John McVie on your list. It's good to know that he's appreciated by someone out there.

Then again, he's not my FAVORITE bassist because I happen to be related to a bass player. :)

Got a lot of faves, but I'll list four (in no particular order):

1. Geddy Lee, Rush
2. Paul McCartney, Beatles (before he turned into a mush-head, he was doing amazing stuff -- check out "Back in the U.S.S.R.," "Everybody's Got Something to Hide (Except for Me and My Monkey)," "I Want You (She's so Heavy)," "She Said, She Said" or etc., etc., if'n ya want proof)
3. John Entwhistle, the Who -- his stuff just shines.
4. Les Claypool, Primus -- what the heck was he doing half the time? Incredible!

I hate lists like that, because I feel bad about leaving off a number of bassists I like (might not be the best in a technical sense, but they sounded great regardless) -- Steve Harris of Iron Maiden, Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kim Deal of the Pixies and Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth are among them.

I capitalized the "a" just to hammer the point.

So, you know the beatles music huh?

what in your opinion would be their greatest song?

Blackbird is my favorite all time beatles song.

Oh! Backwods, so in your rational it doesn't matter how good a player anyone is. There talent is really defind in whether you like there music or not. So, it doesn't really matter how good or bad of a player anyone is eh! If you like their music then that means there the best player in the world.
I get it now. Thanks for the lesson on critiquing.

You'd be a great commercial. NOT!
