Italian woman killed when two-metre metal crucifix falls from monument

ROME (AP) - A woman was killed Wednesday when a two-metre-tall metal crucifix fell on her head in a small town in southern Italy, police said.

Maddalena Camillo, 72, was walking in the main square in the village of Sant'Onofrio when the crucifix toppled from a monument being restored for a religious celebration, police said.

Sant'Onofrio is in the region of Calabria, the toe of the boot-shaped Italian peninsula, about 600 kilometres south of Rome.

It is all very sad that such a tragic incident should happen. But human nature has a way of making jokes out of anything. For all we know, this old woman probably made jokes about the hostage takings in Iraq. I don't find them funny, but she MIGHT have.

I also find it sad how because it was a Christian icon that fell, people find it even more fun to mock.

Ah well. I always thought it was the height of bad taste to display a murder weapon with a bad joke nailed above the crosspiece, but who am I to say?

Had it been ANY religious icon it would be fun to mock. Thats human nature, like the morons who protest the running of the bulls in Pamploma who were gored by the bulls they were trying to protect....or the guys who were killed by the pigs they freed in Germany. Irony is funny....

One time I had a bicycle get crushed when a giant crucifix topping a hill next to the bike rack fell over in a typhoon. It was a nice bike, too :(

It's not the fact she died that's funny, it's the way she died.
