So let me get this straight.

Ancient Egypt was a society in which virtually all Egyptians who were neither nobles nor religious leaders were slaves. As well, all foreign peoples ruled by Egypt were slaves.

Why is the fact that Yhwh slaughters innocent Egyptian children, who had nothing to do with the enslavement of the Hebrew people and (in the majority of cases) whose parents had nothing do with the enslavement of the Hebrew people worth celebrating?

And then to top it all off, Yhwh basically tells the Hebrews to treat their slaves marginally less like shit than they were treated rather than banning human slavery.

Yahweh...not "Yhwh"

Not being Jewish, I don't feel informed enough to answer your question (or accusation, depending on how you look at it)

I have nothing against Jews.

I'm just trying to understand the logic of Passover.

I tend to view the Bible from Genesis to the Kings as little more than an ancient tribe no better or worse than other ancient tribes devising mythological myths to justify their imperialism and brutality.

The peoples' they conquered did the same, the Greeks and the Romans did the same, the Muslims did the same, the Euro-Christians did the same, the Nazis did the same, the Soviets did the same (read the anthem, they basically mythologise themselves as the original workers' paradise) and the Americans and the Chinese do the same thing today, although some Americans are more rational.

What on earth gives you the impression that THIS is what Passover celebrates?

Passover is about the Jewish people being liberated from slavery, not the death of Egyptian children. Over and over again, the point is hammered home that if the Pharaoh had only listened to Moses in the beginning, all the suffering that followed could have been averted.

During Passover, at seders all over the planet, Jews are COMMANDED not to be TOO happy, and to ceremoniously spill wine from their glasses. Why? To remember that their liberation also had a price- the death of the Egyptians. And the point is made, year after year, that Jews are forbidden from celebrating death, even that of their enemies.

Who else includes a morality tale about having sensitivty for one's oppressors in their own holiday of national liberation?

And then to top it all off, Yhwh basically tells the Hebrews to treat their slaves marginally less like shit than they were treated rather than banning human slavery.

I must have missed the point in which this is mentioned during Passover. Feel free to give me an example.

Furthermore, if you want to try to compare modern society against an ancient one, the ancient ones will ALWAYS come out looking bad. You really do have to compare a society with other societies of its time, and considering the Hebrews freed their slaves every 6 years they were quite lenient. Slavery was a fact of life, and warfare was especially brutal. However, few societies back then seemed to have a problem with that...

You are a wise man, my Hong Kong friend.

Are you sure this guy is from Hong Kong? I may be crazy, but...read his name. VERY CAREFULLY. Sound everything out.

I could be totally wrong, but that would be one heck of a coincidence otherwise.
