In Brandenburg, the communist Party of Democratic Socialism won 28% of the vote, making them the second-biggest party in the state.
In neighbouring Saxony, the neo-Nazi National Democratic Party won 9% of the vote. This means that in Saxony they are now as popular as the Social Democrats, the party of Chancellor Gerhard Schroder.
The rising popularity of extreme right-wing and left-wing parties shows dissatisfaction with mainstream parties the Social Democrats and Christian Democrats.
Electoral analyst Prof Karl-Rudolf Korte said that despite this strong protest vote (against established parties), the results would have no major effect on German federal policies.

No effect on federal politics = the right-wing extremes will continue to gain seats in parliaments all over the country. This arrogance of the ruling class considering this a mere act of protest and short-lived is foolish. This is the result of bad politics not just by the SPD but also by the CDU. Both major parties are bad for Germany and while the right-wing extremes cannot solve the problems either, they at least say what the people think, unlike our government party who constantly harp on how great they are and how good their anti-social politics are. I did not vote for them, but I can understand why they got the amount of votes they now have and I can guarantee you that this is not the end of it yet.

You're probably right, but I don't think we are a Weimar Republic heading into Nazi dictatorship again. We can be certain about that.

What makes you so sure of that? The outcome is unpredictable, if things continue this way.

Now I certainly don't profess to be an expert on German politics, but a democratic socialist party is not necessarily a communist one....
Isn't there a seperate communist party?

It's the reformed Communist Party giving itself a new name.

Maybe you remember a few years back. The DVU got some 12% in Sachsen-Anhalt. But they lost most of it in the next election. So, I don't worry that much about the NPD. Although I must say that I didn't agree with the way the ZDF reporter treatet Holger Apfel on TV. He's the main NPD man in Sachsen. That was completely unprofessional of her. Kindergarten level.
Umm...well, they say Democratic, so they must be alright, huh?
(Haha, i'm kidding)

The PDS is the new name for the SED. The SED was the ruling party of East Germany. They are communist. And theres also the KPD. Kommunistische Partei Deutschlands.

The voters of the mainstream parties still think the "PDS" is the communist decendant of the former "SED" from the German Democratic Republic. While the PDS was formed largely out of the same principles, their party program has since long been adjusted to fit the current needs of the German population, not just in the East of Germany, but for the West aswell. They need to get rid of this "communists are the spawn of the devil" image or they will never get any serious influence, despite their large popularity in East Germany. Once again, they are not communists but social democrats. They are the extreme left of Germany and actually quite modern since the reform of their party.

Funny thing. All politcians say they have won. Even those that didn't get the 5%.

The "Party of Democratic Socialism" isn't communist. Its socialist.
